Blog Challenge: Does Your Blog Make a Difference?

Recently, Liz Strauss of the Successful-Blog posted “I Want to Make a Difference, Too”, a guest post from Jesse Petersen of Gitr’s WoW Blog. In it, he debates within himself and asks others how he can make a difference in the world around him.

I want to make a difference.

That sentence is a paragraph in and of itself, and deserving of a second appearance. It speaks volumes about a central yearning of the heart. Is it selfish to want to make a difference? I am not saying that I want to become rich, or famous, or busy. I am just a 28 year old guy with cystic fibrosis, a wife, a very nice apartment in a very nice development, with a wonderful family and a supportive church family who wants to make a difference.

Is it hopeless to think that I possess something that other people would want?

…Is it just a Holy Grail, never to be found? When I find it, will it make a difference in me?

The response was amazing, with people suggesting how to find his passion and generally very supportive and understanding.

Many people start out wanting to make a difference in their world and the world around them with their blogs. Are you one of them? Did it work?

This week’s is:

Does your blog make a difference in the world around you? How?

If your blog makes a difference in the world around you, tell your story. Tell us how it make a difference and why.

Like many of these challenges, there is more. Tell us how making a difference with your blog changed YOU.

This is one of many I offer weekly to help kick your blogging ass. Blog about this on your blog, or share your answer with us here.

For more challenges, see the category.

Here is how I imagine my blog can make a difference:
    – I try to show that one does not need to be a hippie to choose a simpler, more contemplative life
    – I try to bust mainstream cultural myths by applying rational thinking and open up a whole new range of possibilities

If even only one or two readers find out that they can live and think more freely, I’ll be glad. If not, (in any case) I’ll keep trying.

I try to help other freelancers by providing tips, tricks and advice. I know of a couple of people who have been inspired to start freelancing and who have been successful, so I’m happy to have made a difference to them at least.

By publishing my thesis progress on my blog instead of publishing a finished thesis when it’s done I a making a difference in the academic world. Research results are often published when the research is finished and there is no way of knowing how the work evolved. By blogging I hope to share some insights and at the same time hope to receive new insights from readers.

The blog has changed me because it has allowed me to think differently about writing and sharing information, in a positive way.

Well, my blog makes a difference to me as it gives me an output but other than that I seriously doubt it makes a difference to anyone. No one really reads it.

As a domestic abuse survivor and a (former) teen mom, I like to hope my blog makes a difference to others in that it shows HAPPY life after all the pain and hardships. And it makes a difference to ME because I know my words touch others…and it can be great therapy!

greetings as an innkeeper who realized a dream come true moving to montana and opening upa b&B, i think (and hope) the blog makes a difference in the advice/(ongoing) knowledge I gain and tips to start a business and some of the steps involved.

Also i’m hoping my recipes and lifestyle here make a difference too. I know that writing about it has gotten me more focused and grateful

Absolutely — my business/blog is about helping people become more loving, and create rich businesses that directly impact people’s quality of life, and save the world. (ambitious? you bet!)

And how has that changed me? Wow — hugely — for the better. It has caused me to really come out of my shell, and bare my soul, even in moments when my fears are up. I know in my heart that connecting with people is more vital to me than hiding in my fears, and so I’m able to confront places in me that have gone untouched for many years…

I committed myself years ago to personal growth, no matter what… I guess I’m being reminded of that now. And, it’s so worth it — life is worth it. Happiness, joy, love — they’re all worth it.

    (okay, I’ll stop now…)

    Great topic/challenge.

I hope and think that my site, http://www.beyondbehaviors.com, does make a difference. From the responses I’ve gotten from teachers, counselors, school administrators, and college students, the site is on the right track. Although the blog is targeted to a very specific audience (e.g., classroom management, school crisis response, and mental health) I do get some loyal visitors who frequent the site on a regular basis.

The site has changed me in that it has made me a better writer, one who tries to communicate clearly and effectively. Maintaining the blog has also forced me to learn more about the backend things like HTML and codes (which I was completely clueless about). Finally, my site has been very validating to me as a professional because it reminds me that if I set my mind to do something and if I put in hard work that things will pay off (not monetarily per se, but emotionally rewarding).

I finally got around to posting on this topic. I ended up with a confession. Not quite what I was expecting. 🙂

I hope so. By blogging my raw emotions, I hope to connect with and offer some hope to those struggling through intense grief or sorrow of loss. Some days I write and am so exhausted from what I’ve had to say, that I leave my computer in a wretching puddle of opened wounds. Yet, each time I strip away those scabs, I heal a little bit more.

So I guess, not only does it reach my readers, but in the end, it’s my free therapy.

I write a topical blog about living in Taiwan. It is informative if you are wondering about life in Taiwan. It is a very specific niche, but something I have grown to really enjoy. I started it because I felt there wasn’t enough information about what Taiwan really is, there were only sites trying to profit with classifieds and listings for hotels and what not.
