Workshops and Courses

Lorelle offers a wide range of WordPress, web publishing, web writing, social media, and blogging courses, along with some other related topics such as family history on the web, photography, and Scrivener. Here are some of the latest offerings.

Introduction to WordPress: Newspace Photography Center, Portland, Oregon – April 6-April 27, 2016, 6:30-9:30PM, on Wednesdays. Four weeks to learn the basics of WordPress focusing on photography. Set up a free site on WordPress.com and learn how to publish, add images, and make wise design decisions about your site and content. We also cover the basics of social media integration, writing for the web, legal considerations, and how to build content and community on your site. Requirements: Familiarity with web browsers and Internet sites in general. Familiarity with graphic programs like Photoshop highly recommended.

Words and Pictures: Photoblogging and Web Publishing for Photographers: Newspace Photography Center, Portland, Oregon – May 11 – June 1, 2016, 6:30-9:30PM, Wednesdays. This unique program is specifically designed for photographers but applies to a wide range of bloggers with a focus on imagery and graphics. We cover the basics of writing for the web, developing an online persona, different web publishing formats and techniques, and how to incorporate images and imagery into your content through creative storytelling. Requires a website and familiarity with web browsers and Internet sites in general. Familiarity with graphic programs like Photoshop highly recommended.

CTEC 160 WordPress I (5 credit course)
TWO CLASSES: Two classes in the day or evening for 10-12 weeks

Prerequisite: English 101 with grade of C or better or permission from CTEC department

Overview of WordPress for individuals seeking to create websites for personal or professional use, and a core fundamental course for students on the degree path for Web Development, Web Design, Journalism, Business, English, and related degrees. Designed for those with little or no web publishing or design experience, to basic WordPress familiarity.

Students on a web design and web development degree path at Clark College are required to attend this course for Computer Technology ATT degree and Computer Graphics Technology AAT Degree. The course is open to the general public based upon a first-come, first-serve basis depending upon space. There are about 20 spots open in the class and it fills fast.

Clark College now offers Writing for the Web and WordPress II (Advanced)
For non-credit WordPress and Web Writing and Publishing courses, contact Clark College Corporate and Continuing Education for a schedule and to be on the mailing list.

The next scheduled Writing for the Web course at Clark College, taught by the English Department, is for Winter and Spring Quarter.

NOTE: Clark College has an agreement to waive out-of-state fees and allow resident fees for many counties along the Columbia River of Oregon.


Past Workshops and Programs

Forest Grove Senior Center, Forest Grove, Oregon

Designed specifically for the community, this 8-week class is designed to help you start a site on WordPress.com or work with your existing site. We begin the class covering the basics of WordPress, starting with your online identity and profile, writing articles and various types of content, working with multimedia, then moving to customizing and designing your own WordPress site.

Class Size: Limited to 18 people, so register as soon as possible. Computers not provided. Bring laptop, mouse, or tablet with keyboard and mouse.

Lorelle’s WordPress School is an ongoing project to share Lorelle’s in depth and thorough knowledge, teaching, and training experience with WordPress with readers of Lorelle on WordPress. The project offers her unique perspective and techniques for learning WordPress from the inside out starting with content and moving onto design and code. The information is offered freely.

Since 1993, Lorelle VanFossen has been a world leader, trainer, educator, and consultant on blogging, web publishing, and WordPress. She taught the first full-credit WordPress college degree course and is the lead developer of the new Web Development Degree program at Clark College. She is a long time contributor and senior editor of the WordPress Codex and author of Lorelle on WordPress, Lorelle Teaches, and 2 books on blogging and social media.
