Blogging Challenge: How far we’ve come and how far we have to go

I was in a Goodwill this morning, hunting up some warm clothes in order to survive in our new colder climate, and stumbled upon a 1969 Life Magazine issue featuring our first closeup photographs of the moon from the lunar space module, along with pictures of the “earthrise” in color, photographs that will be eternally etched on our mind’s eye of what our planet looks like from space as the sun slipped around the horizon.

Then, we shivered with the thrill of looking at closeup pictures of the dusty and cratered moon’s surface, of stars as slightly bigger points of light than we see from the ground, and the blue and green planet swirled with white clouds that we call home. Today, we take these images for granted as Hubble, satellites, and other spacefaring ships with cameras are sending back even more amazing and colorful space landscapes.

We’ve come a long way while still being so far from the dream of Star Trek and Star Wars, where people travel between planets as easily as we do between cities. Still, it makes me think about how far we’ve come and how far we have to go.

Your blogging challenge this week is to blog about something that tells us how far we’ve come and how far we have to go.

It can be anything. Maybe it’s about how far the car has come with speed, safety, and GPS maps, while we still have so far to go to get there without actually driving or getting into an accident along the way. Or how far we’ve come in transportation in general, flying around the world in hours, and yet how far we have yet to go to take a bottle of water onto the plane. 😉

Think of television, which actually got its start with radio as the world quickly embraced the instant communication industry. Drums and word of mouth were no longer acceptable means of communication. We used to listen to radio news and stories describing lives of people around us and far away. Now we watch them on television. What about movies? The magic of the first talkies, and now, 3D effects and huge movie screen televisions in your home.

And what about cell phones? Talk about instant communication!

There are so many developments, from 20 years ago to 2,000 years ago that can be written about in your blogging challenge. The how-far-we-have-to-go can be “how far we have to go to get it right” or “how far we have to go until it is common practice”, or any version you want of “how far we have to go”.
