Your Blog is Your Unedited Version of Yourself

Bokaro has done it again with The Blog is the New Resume:

Your blog is your unedited version of yourself.
Your blog is what you say when there is nobody standing over your shoulder telling you what to do. It demonstrates how you think outside the rules. It is one of the very few places where you have complete editorial control. Don’t take that for granted.

Interviewed recently for an arts magazine about blogging, I asked the interviewer to describe what Andy Warhol’s blog would look like if he had one today.

“It would look like his books.”

Not a chance. Andy Warhol had editors and publishers standing over his shoulder, monitoring everything he published. There was probably even a “team” that reviewed and made recommendations for what should be on the cover. Warhol would have made compromises along the way, fighting tooth and nail to get his artistic vision out there against a tide of naysayers and doomsday claimers, all fussing over Warhol as a genius while playing with calculators behind his back.

On a blog, Warhol would have had no such controls. No limits. No restrictions except his own. He would have unleashed his energies in any direction he wanted. Master of his published domain. The Picasso of blogging. The tortured Van Gogh of online publishing.

Blogging is free form publishing without limits on what you can publish for public consumption. You are free to publish your words in your voice and tone, without editorial overview, judging, critiquing and review. You are the writer, editor, photo editor, graphic designer, advertising manager, and publisher. You control what it looks like and what it says. This control also comes with a responsibility, to your readers, and respect for those you write about and for.

As a personal blogger, the only restrictions and limitations on what you put in your blog are your own. You can release your creative energies, or let them out slowly over time. It’s your blog. It’s your publishing empire. You’re the boss. You’re in charge of your blog.

That’s so true. Coming from an environment where other folks review your work, edit, and so on, blogging is such a “jazz-like” way of writing on your topic of expertise. I deeply enjoy writing away with passion and without having to write for the editors’ quirkiness as well as the audience, and also enjoy photo editing for posts (I don’t have to sell the picture to an editor or client). Thanks so much for the reminder to let loose!

Whilst I agree that it is your opportunity to express yourself, I’m not sure if Warhol would have. He may well have a cutting edge team of young bloggers expressing exciting ideas he himself had suggested and left them to get on with expressing, as happened with his art in some cases. Of course that is an area where blogging itself can get interesting, when a writer sets down an idea in a post, and then steps back to allow it to be developed and expanded in the comments.
