Marcus Vorwaller’s How to Find a Great Domain Name is a great find if you are looking for a domain name and you are stumped. He lists a wide variety of resources and tools that will help you find and choose a great domain name. Resources and tools include:
- Dislexicon
- JustDropped – expired domain names
- Word Mixer
- Word Finder – Crossword Puzzle Tool
- DomainsBot
- International Domain Search for Free
- Better WHOIS
- Snap It Now Domain Name Search
You can also start by checking Thesarus.com to look for synonyms.
As you choose your domain name for your website or blog, think it through thoroughly. It can be your name if the blog is all about you and your life. But if your blog or site is about boating, fishing, walking, hiking, climbing, cars, travel, sewing, crochet, or ceramics, specifically targetting a theme or subject, then make sure that is in the title of your domain helping people associate the subject matter with the domain name. Remember, creativity is fine but simplicity wins every time.

I love DomainsBot approach to the problem, it’s much easier and straight forward than other tools I’ve tried for this purpose. Just my two cents.
It won’t help you create a name but Instant Domain Search will let you know if what you choose is available. One of those real time searches that are kinda neat.
I find it very helpful to use Keyword Suggestion Tools to come up with ideas for domain names.
Overture- Keyword Selector Tool – This one is my favorite since it sorts the results by the number of searches for that domain in the last month.
Google also offers a good Keyword Tool, however, it does not give you the number of searches like overture.
Also Misk.com has a very good domain look up tool. This is one of the fastest most accurate ones I have found.
Keyword suggestion tools are a great idea. You can find more keyword suggestion tools in the following articles: What are Keywords?, Website Development – Keywords Help You Write Your Blog, Website Development – Listing The Keywords Inside, How Search Engines See, Search, and Visit Your Website, How People Search the Web and How They Can Find Your Blog, and Secret Out – How Google Ranks Websites.
May I suggest http://www.makewords.com – a new Ajax site with synonym search and keyword lists. Suggests domain names instantly.
Thanks for the inpiring link by the way, I’ll improve the keyword suggestion tool in the next couple of days.
