As explained earlier, there are three versions of WordPress, but two versions of actual core software. WordPress 1.5.2 is ready for the public to use, and the other, WordPress 1.6, is in alpha-soon-to-be-beta testing and hopefully coming to a computer near you soon.
So what is going on with WordPress 1.6? Well, we have the resources you need to follow to keep up-to-date on what is going on with WordPress 1.6.
Ryan Boren’s boren.nu site has an entire WordPress Category on WordPress development, status, and information. In a recent “WordPress Commit Digest”, he shares the current status of what is happening with WordPress 1.6. While Matt Mullenweg offers teasers and links on his site, you can get meat and potatoes information on Ryan’s site.
Owen Winkler is another developer working on WordPress and you can often find tidbits of information to tantalize your WordPress 1.6 desires, such as Better Every Day on the work being done on WordPress 1.6, coming changes in WordPress 1.6 permissions and user levels, and WordPress 1.6 feature updates and information.
For information on WordPress 1.6 as it relates to WordPressMU, Donncha O Caoimh, the leading developer of WordPressMU, has a blog with frequent updates on what’s happening as well as on his main site and the WordPressMU Development Blog.

Lorelle, I think you mistakenly mentioned WordPress 1.5.2 as 1.5.3 🙂 Or am I read it correctly?
Good catch. Changed. Thanks.
Hi Lorelle 🙂
What’s the difference between WP 1.6 and WP MU?
Well, we have the answers here. 😉
WordPress Versions – How Many and What’s the Difference
What can you do with wordpress.com
WordPressMU runs WordPress 1.6 ALPHA – which is not ready for prime time – trust me. But it’s stable enough for running on WordPressMU. The full version of WordPress 1.6 should be out for public use within the next couple of months, we all hope.
As far as I know WPMU is like a wrapping for WP standalone versions like 1.5.2 or the 1.6 alpha. It just allows WordPress to be install and used by many users hence the name MU.
Excellent example. Yep, it’s like wrapping paper, to stretch the analogy further. The present is WordPress, whatever version number, and the wrapping is the engine that provides the ability for a host site to have multiple users or multiple blogs.
For users of wordpress.com and other WordPressMU sites, the focus is on the content not on the customization. I am beginning to think of it as WordPress on Training Wheels. 😉
It’s not just training wheels, it’s such a great promotion tool. After using wordpress.com, I can’t ever get enough with WP.
