Are You Ready to Abandon Your Keyboard to Blog?

The Writer’s blog reports that award-winning novelist Richard Powers tells the New York Times he’s giving up the keyboard for writing his novels.

Have you given up the keyboard to write on your blog? Are you using voice recognition software to do your blogging? Do you think the technology is ready for full-time blogging and writing? What kind of computer would it take to blog full-time by voice?

Well, I type much faster than I speak, so I doubt I’ll ever give up the keyboard.

Besides that, I found voice recognition software to be really, really clunky and I’m way to impatient to allow it the trainingstime it needs to work at least somewhat reliable.

I probably think better when I write rather than talk. Even when I talk, I write first 🙂

I use writing as a thinking tool all the time. I suppose I could see using voice recognition to capture a rough draft, but there would be extensive editing afterwards.

I’ve been using Dragon Naturally Speaking to blog on an Athlon 1600+ system for years now. For long posts it’s great for a plodding keyboardist like myself. But for short blurbs, by the time I put on the headset and click on the microphone I can probably type it just as fast and with less hassle.

I also type faster than I talk. I tried the voice recognition software a while back and gave it up. It misunderstood me every now and again, and it was just too slow to learn.

i speak with too much errrr.. ermmm… and hmmmss, so it might not be very easy for me to migrate to blogging without a keyboard! 😛 I’ve tried it before though, it’s just very slow because like what Lelia said, it still misunderstands me, despite spending hours training the engine.

Hi Lorelle,

I have given up my notebook and my PC and blog without them. Nope, I do not use a voice recognition software (Never got used to one). I blog directly from my BlackBerry 8700g. Now, it’s almost the same as a keyboard on a PC (It’s QWERTY after all). Well, almost. 😉

I think most people will feel more comfortable using traditional input devices like keyboards, mouse, etc. After all, it’d be damn tough using HTML Tags with voice recognition software.
