Clagnut again tackles “Web Typography Sucks”, a favorite subject, but this time it is also in reference to the presentation given recently at the SxSW conference in Texas. The post continues the conversation about the issues that confronts web designers today dealing with web fonts, and also includes reference to the slides and references from the program available online.
We covered use of proper characters, vertical rhythm and browser defaults on margins, layout of lists, font stacks & choice of type faces, the relationship between type and grids, and discussion of where typography is in the design, development and production process (it rarely is)…

Ooohhh. Pet peeve topic. I’m off to that page. As a Mac user with a high native resolution screen and bad vision, getting hare brained webdesigners to stop using miniscule type sizes is the holy grail!
I have a blog, I like the lay-out. But the font is just so small, squinting must be your favorite thing to be able to read my blog. I am now exploring to improve the font and made it one fontsize bigger.
I am not happy with it, now you don’t squint but it looks ridiculous, it just doesn’t fit at all. Without CSS there is not much else to do but leave the wordpress theme Blix behind me and move on. I would vote for more possibilities for fonts, especially non-squinting ones!
Lorelle, I am just curious. You use the theme Sandbox. How do you get your typography to be so big? I can understand that you would put in the text, but how do you get the text of your recent posts so big in the left margine? Does that involve a lot of work in the style sheet or do you use the CSS for that?
I now have Blix and adjusted just the text of the posts, that is fairly big now, the rest of the text on the page is small in comparison. I did some surfing on your weblog and did not find anything yet. Way too much pages 🙂

So big? Everything here is done with CSS. There are no tricks. I set a font size for the entire page in the BODY tag at 1em and then size everything as percentages for the most part.
You ask “Does that involve a lot of work in the style sheet or do you use the CSS for that?” I don’t understand the stylesheet is CSS and CSS is in the stylesheet. They are the same. The stylesheet is the name for the file that holds the CSS. Everything that I have control over on this blog’s design is in the stylesheet. I have no access to the template files of the WordPress Theme with WordPress.com.
If you are using Firefox and the Web Developer Tools Extension, use the CSS feature and click the little hidden box in the middle of the style sheet tabs (why it’s “hidden” I don’t know) and all will be revealed.

Communicating in words can be tiresome… missing the look on your face when I utter them. Stupid question perhaps about css and stylesheet.
So big as in bigger than mine, that is what I meant. I will await eagerly on the how you designed your site. and check out the CSS forum in the mean time.

The entire look of an entire web page is controlled through CSS and added graphics. You can purchase the CSS Extra for $15 USD (last time I checked) a year and style whatever you want on your blog, if you have the expertise.
