Ryan Boren, one of the lead WordPress developers, has been releasing preview information on WordPress 2.1, along with some other well-know WordPress developers, testers, and users. Here are some teasers about WordPress 2.1, due out soon:
- Ryan Boren reports there will be a Custom Image Header API which will allow easier handling of adding custom header images to WordPress Themes.
- Boren also announces Right-to-Left (RTL) support which will help international languages function better, a long battled problem with Arabic, Hebrew, and other right-to-left languages.
- The WordPress Codex features a list of WordPress Plugins currently compatible with WordPress 2.1, at least in its alpha stage of testing. If you have a WordPress Plugin you rely upon for your blog, be sure and check the list to see if it has been tested for compatibility.
- Mark Jaquith has also been working overtime not only on development of the latest versions of WordPress, but also maintaining a list of the new WordPress 2.1 Hooks for API and WordPress Plugin authors and designers, offering some exciting ways to easily hook into WordPress core programming.
- BloggingPro reports on their WordPress 2.1 Alpha First Experiences that the new Administration Panels interface is a bit more jazzed up and easier to use and read, as we’ve seen on WordPress.com blogs for a while.
- Last year, CMS Report mentioned the addition of AJAX for the WordPress Administration Panels and more control over user access and permissions, which was integrated into WordPress.com blogs a while ago.
- A month ago, guest blogger Aaron Brazell discussed WordPress Plugin compatibility with WordPress 2.1 on the WordPress Development Blog, recommending to all WordPress Plugin authors to get their Plugins up-to-date. There have been big changes in how WordPress relates to MySQL which may seriously impact some Plugins.
So there is a lot of great things to look forward to with the new version. And another reminder – if you are a WordPress Plugin or Theme author, make sure yours is up-to-date and will handle the transition. It’s expected to be a huge update for a lot of users.

I’m looking forward to WP 2.1.
I’d say that the most affected would be the standard bloggers who don’t know much about plugins and such. They’ll mostly have a tough time if they’ve been relying on a lot of small plugins.
I’m very interested in WP 2.1 – but I think most WP-based blogs will not immediately switch to WP 2.1, because some minor bugs will only be known when the final version is released and therefore most people will wait for WP 2.11 or so.
Yes, looking forward to 2.1 release. It will be interesting also because of the inherent JavaScript support it will have.
I myself usually wait for a couple of days/weeks before jumping into the bandwagon. But I’m very excited about this new release.
more power to wordpress theme!
Cool stuff.
I am waiting for final release.
I’ve been using 2.1 in several stages of development, and strictly from a user’s point of view, it’s nothing to get excited about. You won’t log in to your dashboard and ooooo and awwwwww about anything. The vast majority of changes are hidden, and will render a significant number of plugins and themes to be obsolete, or, in the very least, in dire need of updating.
I’d sum up 2.1 in a single word (as a user): “Yawn”.
I wish 2.1 was going to be more exciting, but I really don’t think it will be. The one thing I’m most looking forward to is the ability to add child categories right from the quick box area when psoting.. and that’s only if it makes the cut.
For the added hassle it’s going to cause me with plugins and such, I’m not nearly as excited as I could be.
Whether or not I upgrade depends on a single plugin: Editormonkey. I love it. It’s a great replacement for the built-in editor, but the plugin author has abandoned it. He’s offered to let anyone willing pick it up to make improvements and keep it up to date, but I haven’t seen anyone volunteer for such a task. (I’d do it myself, but my coding skills are so not up to the task.) If I can’t keep my favorite plugin and the built-in editor doesn’t pick up the slack, I can’t find any reason for me to upgrade at all.
Thanks for the news.
Nice post Lorelle.. 🙂 I just wanted to let you know, and everyone else that my Codex page URL was shortened down a bit, since 2.1 made Beta.
The new URL is here, for some reason, the redirect for the original URL isn’t working that great.
Anyway, I surely hope the plugin authors get on the ball here soon, by updating their plugins, and then adding them to my page!
Also, hopefully soon here, I’ll be making a blog post as well, about a few things to look for with WordPress 2.1.. 🙂
I only wish that there would be a way to tag your posts as well of using categories. That would make it easier to publicize a blog without littering up the sidebar.
I am looking forward to see how V2.1 is going to handle banner code. I have lost enough hair in the last few years without having this add to the problem.
Why would anything in a WordPress Theme interfere with banner codes/scripts? I’ve never had a problem.
I’m looking forward to 2.1 too. I’m a geek like that.
This may sound cheezy, but I hope there’s an updated login/register page (perhaps similar to wordpress.com). The plain white one is getting old.
I am looking forward for wp 2.1
I am really excited about WP 2.1. I am looking forward to it. 🙂
Really looking forward to 2.1 – just a little concerned with the plugin issue – it WILL affect many.
Hi Lorelle… enjoy your site very much. Thanks. I got so much out of the 2.1 upgrade process that I thought I would post some “tips” and my process for anyone else who may find it useful. No problems, just good clean WordPress fun! And Happy Birthday WordPress!

Are your plugins WordPress 2.1 compatible?
Guess it’s time to get in touch with the developers of the other plugins I use and remind them to upgrade their plugins, otherwise I’d be in a lot of trouble along with the other bloggers.

[…] WordPress 2.1 is supposed to be coming out soon too. They’re going to be requiring MySQL 4.0 which at least is better than the 4.1 requirement they were shooting for. I happen to be one of those people relying on a 4.0 install and I’m on a host that has a very alrge number of people on it. Safe to say I wouldn’t be the only one stuck in a position where I’d need to stick with an old version if they had gone with 4.1. […]
