Akismet Smacked By Comment Spam: The Stats

, the official comment spam fighter for WordPress.com blogs and WordPress users has been working overtime to fight off an onslaught of comment spam bots.

Akismet has a new Akismet Stats page with a chart to show you how hard it is working to combat comment spam.

Akismet Comment Spam Chart

The chart measures the number of comment spam that Akismet catches, which, as you can see, has spiked recently. It also compares it with “Ham”, the number of Akismet users. I’m not sure how helpful that information is, compared to the number of comment spam that gets through and the number of good comments that Akismet allows through, though the latter is sorta of shown on the front page as a percentage of the number of comments marked as spam.

The past few hours has seen quite a few comment spams coming through my comment panel, though a lot of them are ones I haven’t seen before. Akismet works by being trained to recognize the patterns of comment spam. By marking comments as comment spam and not deleting them, you can help Akismet learn what is spam and what is good.

Big kudos and hugs to Akismet and its developers. It’s putting up a very brave fight against the evil comment spammers. It’s up to us in the WordPress.com Community to help Akismet do its job to protect all of us by marking our comment spam as comment spam if it gets through. And show some appreciation, folks, for the hard work being done which you are getting for free. ‘Tis a beautiful thing!

yeah, ive noticed a bunch of smap getting through akismet in the pask week or so; on the order of a few hundred a day. ive reinstalled spam karma to double up next to akismet to keep the end user experience as clean as possible.

If you have the full version of WordPress, install Bad Behavior WordPress Plugin RIGHT NOW. It killed off and stopped at the door 98% of all comment spam. Spam Karma cleaned up the rest. The new version is HOT! I wish WordPress.com was using Bad Behavior like they were in the beginning. That would probably prevent a lot of this.

On your recommendation I installed Bad Behaviour alongside Spam Karma2 – my last 2 SK2 logs show that 2 spams have been collected and BB2 got 7. I feel much more secure.

I guess WP.com should try out BB beta version. It’s been extremely effective in stopping most of the spam on my site.

I think Akismet’s pretty good. I haven’t had to delete any spam yet.
