When Akismet Goes Bad: What to do when Akismet starts spamming your own comments

The reason why I created Akismet Auntie Spam helper script was because I seem to have a problem few other people do — every couple of months Akismet decides that my own comments and trackbacks are spam. This is unforgivable and a fatal usability flaw in Akismet’s design. Comments and trackbacks from the blog admin should skip the spam check process. I challenge anyone who argues differently to have to deal with always having to double check if their own comments are marked as spam. The delay between posting a comment and it appearing in Akismet almost always assures that you will miss one or there will be an inordinate delay in responding to your commenters.

But enough of the ranting about my problems with Akismet. Here are two things you can do to help when Akismet is marking your own comments as spam.

The Secret Recipe of Comment Spam Comments

Mr. Louis Vuitton just sent me a message in my blog comments I’d like to share with you. I share this touching message because it is highly educational when it comes to the art of spam comments, and serves to remind us of why we love having Akismet, the best comment spam fighter, on our […]

Blog Struggles: Surviving the When Blogging Goes Bad Blues

It’s been a hell of a day. I’m sure you’ve had them. When every other word out of your mouth should have started with F or S but didn’t because you “grinned and bared it” for the grace of others. Okay, let’s be honest, you didn’t grin, you bit the bullet. We all have these […]

Blog Struggles: When Are Too Many Comments Too Many Comments?

Recently, what appeared to be a thoroughly delighted fan went through my blog with a vengeance and left over 40 comments within a two day period. Each were personalized and directed to me, with enthusiastic comments and reflections on what was written. At first I was pleased, as I always am when my blog touches […]

Attack of the Mean Commenter: Blocking Commenters and Comments on Your WordPress Blog

By now, you all should know that you have total control over your blog’s comments, right? You can choose to allow only registered users to comment, delete any comment you want, edit any comment, and do the same for trackbacks. While it helps to have a good comments policy, you still have total control over […]

There are so many WordPress Plugins that deal with blog comments, I’ve been working on this post since a month before this month long series on WordPress Plugins began. I’ve not covered all of them, so please include your favorites and why in the comments below. There are so many things you can do with […]

Bad-Behavior Continues to Give the Finger to Comment Spammers

The brilliant brain behind Bad Behavior, the comment spam fighter that “gives the finger to comment spammers” before they gain access to your blog, is Michael Hampton. Before I get more to bragging on my buddy, Michael, I’d like to announce that the latest update to Bad Behavior, version 2.09, has been released and version […]

The Number One Flaw in WordPress: Comments

I’m sure that your “number one flaw” or lacking feature in WordPress might be different from mine, but this is one that really bothers me. I think the solution is simple. So the question is: Why hasn’t something been done to fix this flaw? The flaw? Comments. Comments are critical to blogs. They are the […]

Editing Your Blog Comments

I’ve written a lot about comments, how to handle them, respond to them, and some guidelines for posting comments. One aspect of comments rarely covered indepth is the issue of editing your comments. Not “your” comments left on other blogs, but the comments you receive on your blog. As a general rule, you can judge […]

One Year Anniversary Review: Comments on Comment Spam

Comment spam is one of the biggest blights on the Internet. As far as I’m concerned, comment spam is the single most despicable and destructive force on the Internet today. Yes, we have problems with censorship, government infringement, copyright infringement, and other abusive issues, but comment spam is a plague that infests everyone. Part of […]

One Year Anniversary Review: Comments on Comments

Comments were one of the main reasons I started exploring various Content Management Systems (CMS) a few years ago. After 10 years with a static website, I wanted feedback. I wanted interaction. Sites were just beginning to offer comments outside of guest books and contact forms, and I craved a responsive and interactive audience. A […]

Check Your WordPress.com Comments for Comment Spam

I wrote a few days ago about the massive comment spam attack on WordPress blogs, especially WordPress.com blogs, and how for the most part, Akismet was catching all the evil comment spam. Well, the battle is still being won, but comment spam is slipping through. A huge round of hotels, steroids, and other comment spam, […]

Mean Spirited Comments and Blogging

Trolls. Flamers. Meanies. Vicious. Not Nice. Unkind. Rude. Inconsiderate. Nasty. Whining. Bitching. Moaning. Bastards. Where there are humans, you will find humans who seem to have more than their share of these personality traits. Blogging is no exception. Even the most non-controversial blogs, like this one, is the target of the blogging thug, mean spirited […]

Creating a “Bad Code Day” Error Message for Your Blog

I am a fan of fun 404 Page Error pages. I also like entertaining messages for readers when blogs or websites take a “bad day off”. I’ve created such a page for my main site to put up when things go bork in the code to let people know what is happening. It also acts […]
