Today, National Public Radio (NPR) will feature a story on unusual businesses working on the web featuring Rebecca and Fred Gerendasy of Cooking Up a Story, a Portland, Oregon, area internet video production company. Their successful video blog, Cooking Up a Story and Cooking Up a Story YouTube Channel, produce a wide variety of film documentaries on sustainability, with a focus on food, agricultural, and food history.
Many businesses are now exploring the online world and considering blogs, debating between text and multimedia, or a combination of both. Rebecca and Fred have been going strong since 2006 with their unique storytelling video presentations, way ahead of the curve for many small businesses when it comes to embracing the web.
Highlights of their Cooking Up a Story shows include Sausage Making: A Good Justice about the art of making sausages by hand, Seed Art about turning seeds into designs and artwork, Building A Bridge To Somewhere: Farm To School about a farmer who brings the farm into local school lunchrooms, Food Works about a youth program that produces and sells food at local farmer markets and low income families, Raised On Grass: Pastured Fed Animals shows how a mid-life career change turns Silicon Valley experts into farmers, Commercial Composting: Why One Restaurant Recycles about how restaurants can help save the world through recycling to create garden compost, and Monastery Mustard about an old family secret recipe for mustard by the Benedictine Sisters at Queen of Angels Monastery who use the proceeds to help local homeless and migrant families.
Since I moved to Portland, Oregon, recently, I’ve started meeting a lot of the brilliant folks in the blogging and open source community. I was intriged by the passion Fred and Rebecca bring to their blog and video documentaries, telling the very human side of how we survive in the modern age by preserving the past. Food is a passion for both of these people, but more importantly, it is the passion for the preservation of the old ways of cooking, growing, and preserving food that excites them. They hunt all around the region for other people passionate about sustainable food issues, and share their discoveries on their blog.
I was so impressed with what they do on the web, I invited Rebecca Gerendasy to guest blog here, discussing how they find, edit, and produce their film quality shows, helping us all learn more about video and video blogging techniques.
