Within the last hour, WordPress 2.5 was released for public access. Go for it.
I’m in Dallas for WordCamp Dallas and Matt Mullenweg is speaking right now and just made the annoucement.
I’ll have more information later. Go get your copy and have fun with the new Administration Panels. Click EVERYTHING.
WordPress.com users will hopefully get upgraded within the week.

Upgrading as we speak… I feel so sorry for all those people at WordCamp Dallas who have just heard the announcement and can’t do the upgrade straight away, must be gutting! 🙂
My footer shows ‘You are using a development version (2.5)’ but I just downloaded the latest version from wordpress.org did someone forget to update the text? 🙂

I gave this release a spin on my localhost and looks great. I can’t wait to upgrade the live website! The new dashboard is fantastic and I really love the new built-in gallery! Have fun with it everyone!

SVN upgrades are simple, fast and troublefree. It only took 2 minutes to upgrade to WP 2.5 (+ 5 min. of backups). Honest in less than 15 minutes I had upgraded all three of my sites.
I like the new admin interface, the automatic plugin upgrades, and the color scheme.
What else should I be looking at or clicking?
Just upgraded – love the new interface. My blog seems to load faster as well.
I’m waiting for the issues to settle down at the .org forums before upgrading. I hate having to resurrect a dead blog.
This is the first time I’ve EVER upgraded to a new WP version within hours of its release. I feel a little ashamed of myself for getting all caught up in the excitement. Probably should’ve waited a few weeks. But user-friendly design is important to me, and regardless of what one thinks of the color choices, the new backend is a vast improvement.
While I like most of what is in the new WP2.5, I have to say that the image/gallery interface is NOT working for me at all. I don’t have any of the things that should show up – no batch upload, no thumbnail visibility in the gallery, not expansion when I click on “Show”, and (more importantly) no way to put the images into my post other than finding the actual link (by clicking on the thumbnails I find under “MEdia Library), copying that link and then pasting it with img html in the post. Is this a browser issue? Is anyone else having this issue?
Will upgrade soon. Firs i’ve installed it on my localhost. I just can’t keep my self from saying: “The ADMIN SUCKS !”. I’ve already installed tiger admin, and will code my own admin withing a few days. The old admin from wordpress was perfect. It was clean and directed you to the point. With the new admin, wordpress user will either fall or stagnate. Who needs pretty colors and flowery graphics in an admin panel anyway. This was the worst decision of automatic so far.
For those who haven’t made the upgrade I am here to tell you of a couple of broken plugins and some fixes already made. First off the old version the LiveJournal CrossPoster does not work. There is a workaround posted to Google Code. I have already uploaded the fixed version of the plugin to my blog since no one has heard from the plugin author for over a year, as far as I know. If you are the author, and want it taken down contact me. The ever problematic MySpace CrossPoster still doesn’t work. Both of the sticky post plugins that I know of don’t work either.

Please, in the WordPress Codex are two “master” pages that list all the various compatibilities: WordPress Theme Compatibilities and WordPress Plugin Compatibilities. Check them before upgrading to ensure your favorite WordPress Plugin is updated and ready to go. If not, contact the Plugin author if you cannot live without that Plugin.
Upgraded but I seem to have lost my footer. Can’t see blogcatalog and mybloglog which I had on the footer when I was using 2.3

The issue might be with BlogCatalog and MyBlogLog and not WordPress. There is little that should have impacted your WordPress Theme in this upgrade.
haven’t downloaded, but gonna do it very soon after backing up the files 🙂
WordPress 2.5 looks great, but think I will hold off upgrading for a bit and let all the early adopters expose any bugs and vulnerabilities first.

for the person with the missing footer, mybloglog and blog catalog do work in 2.5, I have them running on my test blog. The problem could be if you have them widgetized rather than hard coded. Also try adding either a widget to your sidebar to restore the footer. I have seen this problem before in 2.3 and it mostly has to do with an open tags in your theme. If you add one or more tags to the top of your footer.php it may also restore functionality.

Techie Buzz – Urgent WordPress Automatic Upgrade Update
Damn. Upgraded. Got a serious error and my blog is broken. Everyone is having fun but me. Although there are a lot of complaints like mine in the Forums.

Don’t forget, you rarely hear from the thousands and thousands who have no trouble upgrading. If your blog broke, then the issue is most likely Theme or Plugin, not core programming.
Reports from the Forums are statistically stating that most of these are a result of doing something wrong during the upgrade or a Theme or Plugin issue. Hopefully, this will be easier in the future with the automatic upgrade feature they are working on.

i’ve spent several days reading the forums, and way too many hours trying to “get image upload to work”. finally wiped 2.5 and reinstalled 2.3.3.

what is happening with older versions of WordPress?
Our company blogs have been manipulated by malicious attacks… And working in a Java company, I’m getting to hear a lot of complaints from sys admin about how unreliable PHP is. Cos I recommended it.
We’ve upgraded to 2.5 but this is serious for WP
WordPress is losing its good reputation. What measures are being taken? What can I do to help as a WP user?

PHP isn’t unreliable. The folks who code with PHP aren’t reliable. 😀 WordPress is not losing its reputation. In fact, they are earning it by releasing early and fast security updates when a serious security threat is uncovered. They respond faster than most programs, many of which people continue to use a year or two after a security vulnerability has been revealed. Automattic/WordPress is more up front and honest about sincere security threats than most companies.
The majority of the security issues are really non-threatening. They apply to old versions, specific Plugins, and are fairly harmless, though people do love to sensationalize them. Actually, a lot about WordPress is boring, once you’ve blogged for a while, so a little security threat adds drama, don’t you think? 😉
Honestly, keep updated, aware of what’s going on, and make sure your company hires the BEST Java folks around as there are a lot more security issues with Java and Javascript, as well as with all the various CMS, blogging, and software programs out there. WordPress is now being used by millions, and if the NY Times, CNN, Fox TV, and like folks put their trust in WordPress, shouldn’t your company?
Remember, it isn’t a flaw in WordPress that’s the problem. It’s those who thrive on breaking code that are the problem – and the solution if they work for the benefit, not evil, of others. The more vulnerabilities are found, the stronger WordPress becomes.
does 2.5.1 fix the permalinks issue for those on IIS? there are quite a few of us that are unable to use “pretty” permalinks and none of the suggested solutions provided work for us.

You will have to ask on the WordPress Support Forum regarding that issue. I thought this was fixed with servers upgrading their servers (it’s more of a server issue than a WordPress issue, to my understanding).
