The World Intellectual Property Organization presents the Creative Heritage Project: IP Guidelines for Documenting, Recording and Digitizing Intangible Cultural Heritage, a project to help cultures around the world preserve and protect their history and traditions in a digital world.
Digital technologies and the Internet offer unprecedented opportunities for the promotion, preservation, revitalization and protection of intangible cultural heritage, such as traditional music, art, performances, symbols and designs.
Many valuable initiatives are using these new technologies to record, digitize and disseminate databases of these traditional cultural expressions.
However, the digitization and wider dissemination of traditional cultural expressions can lead to their misappropriation and misuse. For example, cultural heritage safeguarding efforts have sometimes unwittingly led to the unauthorized commercial exploitation of culturally sensitive materials.
As a result, indigenous organizations, museums and archives, and cultural researchers have called for guidance on which IP issues and options arise during recording and digitization initiatives.
In response, the WIPO Creative Heritage Project is developing best practices and guidelines for managing IP issues when recording, digitizing and disseminating intangible cultural heritage.
The documentation provided within this project will help any blogger or team of bloggers who want their blog to help preserve their culture’s history and traditions, especially in their Practical Resources and Database sections.
I was looking for a list of blogs and sites working with the project and couldn’t find one. This project is new, but it represents some ground-breaking tools and resources to help you preserve your history within a blog format.
Here are a few indigenous and native blogs I did found which specialize in preserving and honoring the past, and provides news on the culture and peoples:
- Native Web offers North American Native Indian links and resources, and a new blog service for indigenous native bloggers that is still unfinished in design and presentation.
- WordPress.com Tag for “Indigenous People”
- Indigenous Issues Today covers native people, culture, and news of the Americans
- The Blackfeet Review
- The Native Blog is a personal blog about a Native American family and the Potawatomi tribe
- Indigenous Issues Today
- The Voice of the Taino People Online
- Native Heritage @ University of Alaska Anchorage features Alaska history
- Cyndi’s List of Unique Peoples and Cultures features some blogs and websites dedicated to diverse cultures and histories
Finding these was harder than I thought. Do you know of any blogs which specialize only in native history and cultural preservation?

“Do you know of any blogs which specialize only in native history and cultural preservation?”
Depends on how you define “only”. The Grassroots Science, http://ykalaska.wordpress.com and the Biocultural Science, http://13C4.wordpress.com are the two of mine that cover these topics but the information is applicable to all peoples.
Two of the Tundra Teachers I list are Alaska Natives but they write about everyday things.
I recommend Karen Brewster’s paper Copyright Issues for Oral Histories on the Web
Not ‘only’ native history and cultural preservation.
But I’m talking rather often about historical knowledge, folklore, I tell legends and myths about herbs, folkloristic uses that tend to be forgotten…
I blog on preserving my cultural identity of being Italian-American. The purpose of my blog is to promote, preserve, and share the background of the Italian-American history, culture and traditions. I think to preserve and pass on history can be seen in different perspectives when its personally accounted for, such as a blog written by an autobiographical writer. We can only hope that what is published is in fact true and really in the best interest of preservation of any cultural identity.
