They say that history and fashion repeats itself, and it’s true. Cleaning up and decluttering your blog is back as a new trend, according to Jason Kaneshiro on the Blog Herald in Getting Back To Basics: Blog Decluttering:
When Web 2.0 first began with Google and Craigslist, one of the “innovations” was simplicity itself – empty, uncluttered designs that allowed users to get what needed to be done with a minimum of design elements.
I feel this basic concept has been forgotten recently, what with widgets, ads, videos, monetization, polls, spam, and splogs. Some blogs are so obscured with extra stuff that the content – the post itself – is nearly impossible to find.
It may be time to get back to basics. This week, I noticed several articles about clutter reduction, enough to say that excesses may be reversing and we’re entering a “clutter-reduction equals increased productivity” trend
Jason lists some example articles, but also a list of decluttering things to consider on your blog.
Fad or not, I’m totally in favor of cleaning up the clutter and removing the unnecessary distractions from our blogs. I’m slowly cleaning up my own. What about you?

cleaning is on here too !! as part of moving my focus, I am cleaning up unwanted stuff… things of less important.. and image ads were taken off.. replacing text ads on posts… and a theme without a header image.. and lot more to come !
There have been two blogs in recent memory I stopped writing because there were more
ads on the and in the posts that you couldn’t even figure out what the host had
written. And sometimes we do write one liner posts. I just gave up as their blogs
turned into more of ad space than good content.
Yes Lorelle. I too have been hit by the spring cleaning bug in November….YIKES! I’ve only been a WP fan for about a half year but have fallin’ in love with so many elements of WordPress it’s not even funny. Given my computer illiteracy however, I’ve decided to enlist the help of others in transforming my uglier than sin blog and have everything moved lock, stock, and barrel…’sigh’ again. I guess I’m old school so much, I’d rather have those who know, do it right..vs teaching this old dog a trick he never knew..I agree though…remove the crap, half of which we probably don’t even remember how we acquired or why. When I resurface, hopefully I will have been a recipient of a good cleansing shower!! Even if I lose you…I’ll find you again…(creepy stalker voice there)…LOL…Blogtommy

Yes, clutter may seem like an inevitable problem, but if you want to be more productive and more fulfilled, it is time to walk the talk towards taking control and having a clutter-free blog. =]
