Are Blog Comments Getting You Down?

EduBlog Insights offers some insights with “Sometimes Blogging is Difficult”, a poetic insight into the challenges blogging offers.

Sometimes blogging is difficult, at least for me. I haven’t been able to blog lately because I’ve been thinking a great deal about issues that can’t be discussed “easily” on a blog. Factors such as the people involved or the sensitivity of the topic prevent total disclosure. That’s a good thing but I think the topics are worthy of discussion and I could gain from the insights of my “edublogging” family.

The main challenge at the moment for the author is the issue of comments, one I know many of you struggle with. I offered “Comments on Comments” to help people understand the responsibilities and process of having comments on your blog. It wasn’t enough. “How NOT to Comment on Comments” helped more people understand the issues of how to comment, and how not to comment.

To deal with the nasties who invade the interactive blogging world, I wrote “Mean Spirited Comments and Blogging”, and then to help you put the power back into your hands by controlling comments by “Editing Your Blog Comments”.

Don’t let the struggles of nasty people make your blogging experience miserable. Don’t take revenge, or bite back with nasty comments. Do nothing to inflame them. Rise above them and remove their negative influence. Keep your focus on the higher ground: your content and blogging goal.

    For some reason, I am not getting any comments on my blog, any suggestions?

    Have you read your own blog? I just did. I have no idea what you are talking about and there is no “what is this about” page that I could easily find. It looks more like a “quote others” and feed supplier page than a conversational blog. I found nothing that encouraged me to comment, but I did see a place to log in and become “part of the community”. If it is set up to require logging in before commenting, it kills a lot of comments. That’s a lousy setup.

    Take another look, if you are serious about getting comments, at how you supply information and how you request conversations.

    I usually like my commenters, but I did have a recent spout this weekend when I got on Digg and it was flame after flame.

    I am involved with a social network / blog thing through workand we have just over 1050 users now (my personal blog uses wordpress but this one uses drupal). I must say that some people get offended at the weirdest things…I think people can be a little sensitive sometimes. Would you say Lorelle that to get comments you also need to somehow get on peoples blog rolls – traffic helps yes? My personal blog got comments early on but I have lost some momentum…

    Do blogrolls increase traffic and comments? No. Not necessarily. Traffic comes from having content people want. Comments come from writing content that encourages comments and conversation.
