Why Do You Comment in the Comments?

I’m working on an article about comments, why people comment, and what comments do for recipients, and I ran across this wonderful commentary on the issue of comments from Kamigoroshi – Why Do You Comment On People’s Blogs?

Why does a person blog? My answer would be because they like to express their thoughts and satisfy their narcissism. Every blog may be different, but these are the times where almost everyone blogs about the same things. Hates, loves politics, controversies, misery, technology, “noodle” posts and even food. There is a limit to how different we can be when you realize that everyone can blog around the same things. The difference is, how any of us write…that makes a blog unique.

Then why does a person comment? Ahh…there is the brain teaser. To satisfy their narcissism by telling the world that they exist? To ask unrelated questions because they can’t find the damn Contact-Me page or the Chatbox? To give a valid point? Naturally it’s all of the above…but of the 3 reasons there, 2 of them are things I don’t need. A brownie point if you can tell me which they are.

So why comment? Why not comment? The answer is simple, because if a blog is truly unique, then I’d comment. Because if the blog actually grabs my attention, then I’d comment. Because if the blog has something I can relate to other than my own narcissistic need, then I’d comment. Because if the blog can make me happy, sad or otherwise pissed off, then I’d comment.

So, why do you comment on a blog? What compels you to reach out to the keyboard and expose yourself to the world? Blogging is totally narcisitic, without a doubt, but what about comments?
