The Secret Recipe of Comment Spam Comments

Articles about blogging tipsMr. Louis Vuitton just sent me a message in my blog comments I’d like to share with you. I share this touching message because it is highly educational when it comes to the art of spam comments, and serves to remind us of why we love having Akismet, the best comment spam fighter, on our WordPress sites.

It is really self-explanatory, but if you need translation, I will do so after the following quoted comment. I’ve broken it up into sections to make it easier to read.

{{I have|I’ve} been {surfing|browsing} online more than {three|3|2|4} hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. {It’s|It is} pretty worth enough for me.
{In my opinion|Personally|In my view}, if all {webmasters|site owners|website owners|web owners} and bloggers made good content as you did, the

Thanks.|

Welcome to the magic recipe of a comment spammer.

Due to an error in their spam system, I got the full text of their spammy comments. This is the code used to generate massive comment spam on your site. It is a template giving a human spammer guidelines on how to comment in a way that makes you think they are really paying attention to your needs and site.

Notice all the misspellings? The bad grammar? Generated by a non-English speaker. Notice the fake sincerity, the attempt to appear friendly than necessary. Did you spot how they were trying to be soooo helpful, asking all the right questions to appear like they are real people desiring real help? All signs of comment spam.

It is also a template for the spam bot, customizing itself based upon input it gathers, randomly generating the different conditions in the curly brackets to slightly customize each comment to fool the likes of expert comment spam fighters like .

Google Search for comment spam phrase returns millions. It isn’t working. The few that get through, we long time bloggers recognize and wisely mark as spam so the information goes into the Akismet database to prevent these in the future.

It is clear from the contents that comment spammers are trying to use kindness, politeness, and good manners to convince us that their spam comment is legit.

DO NOT BE FOOLED.

As long as they are making money by us being fooled and replying, or clicking on their spam links, they win.

Right now, they are winning. I did a search for a couple of phrases within the text and found millions of these in the search results, evidence that people are either not paying attention to their comments, allowing comment spam to display and fester, making money for spammers and driving your customers away, or they are fooled by the context.

This search turned up 6.5 million search results, proving that spammers are winning. Another turned up more than 10 million. This must end. Statistics since 2005 continue to state that more than 90% of the content traveling across the web is spam. Some stats say more than 98%, clogging up our virtual arteries.

Fight back by marking comment spam as spam with Akismet and move on. As a community, we can train Akismet to protect us from the spammers and eventually they will give up as their income will have stopped.

Absolutely. I’ll email it to you tomorrow when I get back to my office.

Sam, I’d also be happy to send you the 20,000 word text template that someone dropped into my site last year. Was hoping that someone, somewhere could get some use out of it. :)

Is it possible to have Akismet go back through a database and recheck for spam? Because that would be really nice.

Rechecking spam with Akismet has been around for a long time. Check the comments panel.

I’m not sure what you mean. I’ve been reporting on comment spam since before 2000.

I do clean up my comments if they get through, and Askimet is worth more then gold. I am inundated though with spam in my email too. I know about the first degree measures as having different emails, keep your emails from websites, use different mails to buy online and such, but I am convinced that I should not have to do all that. At this point in time, I get more spam mails then true ones. I have been training my mail app on OSX, 10.8, but it does not seem to help a lot. Even though I spend hours over the last week to mark them as spam… I am thinking about giving up on email all together. It should not be that our resources are clogged up by spammers. I never, never click on any ad either in mail or facebook or wherever those bots are hanging out. I am sure that providers could do a lot more then they are, especially for those who do clean up mail and comments. I agree with you Lorelle that keeping a close eyes on commenters is a very good thing to do. I don’t understand why people would not read the comments that other people take the time for to write, talking about genuine commenters now. I wonder if anything is actually done with our spam marked comments on wordpress… Let’s hope so.

@photocateyes: When you mark a comment as spam with Akismet, the information goes into the database of Akismet and it learns, helping to prevent the same comment spam on other sites. I’ve often marked a few things as spam, and later went into the spam queue to check something and found the same comment I marked a few hours earlier caught in duplicate. I know that Akismet also blocks many from every seeing the light of your site, so it is blocking at various levels to protect your site. It’s amazing.

So thankful for Akismet to keep our online homes free of this junk. If the comment itself doesn’t give it away as spam, the email/website address usually does.

What is truly horrifying is realizing how much Internet bandwidth this stuff eats up!

Whenever I update my workshop and class material on site interactivity, especially comment spam, I update the chart of ham verses spam on Akismet and want to throw up. It is stunning how much crap is clogging the arteries online, indeed. I was really hoping by now we’d have put them out of our misery…still waiting.

Your blog striked a cord with me since i was experiencing this. Ever since I started my personal blog one month back, I have been getting a lot of these spams. Spams that looks genuine. And I did get fooled once, bt my teacher and guru Mr.Badrinaryanan said that asikmet knows it’s job, it will keep all spammers at bay and am glad I listened to him. These days I just delete the spams. Asikmet is indeed a boon to all bloggers. Thanks for this article.

I’ve heard you mention Akismet many time on your blog, Lorelle; however, I find Akismet to be a comment killer.

For instance, they’ve had me on their “spam” list for a couple of years now, despite the fact that I’ve contacted them several times.

Akismet sends many valid comments into spam; as a result, we are missing out on engagement.

I left several comments on your blog in the past, but Akismet didn’t let them go through. I’ve stopped trying for a while, but your consistent mention of Akismet made me want to try it one more time. Let’s see if this one goes through.

    • Posted April 8, 2013 at 8:52 am | Permalink

That is a problem with any automated checker, Ana. I used to go through the Akismet castoffs and every 1,000 or so I would find a legitimate comment. But, for the time it would take to weed through them all now – I just can’t do it. In my experience running blogs on differnt software (WordPress, Blogger, Movable Type, GreyMatter, etc) WordPress blogs are targeted for comment spam far more. It may be that Blogger, being on a hosted network, blocks comment spam versus WP being self hosted does not go that extra mile. Of course, lesser known software is always safer from being tampered with. Just as there is a large difference in running Linux and Windows. I would get pop ups telling me my computer was infected with a virus and laugh – because there were meant for Windows computers.

I do think about comments missed. On my blogs the comments are usually from people I have known online a few years. Everything else is spam or someone offering me a free gust post or other great advice. I have turned comments off before. I didn’t miss them. But, friends asked to have them available. So, for them I keep them up.

Sorry you had an unfortunate experience with Akismet. I’ve been in their spam list on and off in the early years, too. Remember, Akismet learns. It gets better and better through participation within the crowd sourced world it lives in on millions of sites. If you left comments on this site and they didn’t turn up, it might not be Akismet with the issues. I’ve a quick trigger finger on deleting comments, not that yours would be spammy. If they don’t appear, always use my contact form to let me know.

I checked the Akismet queue for years and gave up a couple years ago as the ratio of ham (good comments) to spam is almost nil on my site. I get thousands of comment spam every day. Wish it wasn’t true. Comment spam does not denote popularity, by the way. That’s a myth. Incoming links lead spammers, human and bot, to sites, not popularity or frame.

Thanks for letting me know and your comment came flying through!

Inspired by you, I just went through 29 pages of comment spam caught by Akismet, a dredge through the arm pit of society and spam, totally 855 comment spams and found 6 instances of trackbacks from my own articles to my own articles marked as spam. LOL! I’ll have to keep an eye on those to make sure they stay out of the spam queue. I marked them all as not spam.

I found not a single legit comment in the rest, nor legit trackback. In fact, I found very few trackbacks. Out of 855 comment spams in my queue, 25 were trackbacks (had the signature [...]). I’ve found the same ratio for years when I’ve randomly done searches, which is why I’m stunned at the idea of killing off trackbacks by blaming them for comment spam when it is direct comment spam that is the majority of crap coming in through the comment box.

Thanks for challenging me to check in again on this!

Sorry it took me so long to follow up on my original comment, Lorelle.

Here’s the deal – I am the owner of a fairly large blog, TrafficGenerationCafe.com. I love to link out to different sources that complement what I write about – website traffic.

A while ago, I stumbled upon your blog. I liked it. I left you a few comments, which were caught in Akismet spam filter and never published. I linked to several of your blog posts – and Akismet, of course, blocked any pickbacks from me.

All these efforts to highlight your content and get connected with you were flushed down the drain by Akismet.

Result: I do still occasionally stop by, but I don’t comment and I rarely link out to you, Lorelle.

So you might be right: you are not missing out on that many comments with Akismet, but those that you are missing out on, might actually count quite a bit toward building up your blog.

The only reason you saw my previous comment was because I logged in with my wp.com account instead of linking out to my actual Traffic Generation Café blog. It’s just too much effort to have a conversation. You know what I mean?

    • Posted June 5, 2013 at 3:02 pm | Permalink

I know exactly what you mean, and I’m glad you told me about your comments not getting through. If you do comment with that email, let me know through my contact form so I can search for it in the Akismet queue and remove it. Akismet learns. You just have to teach it. :D

Thanks for the referrals. I’ll check them out. I really appreciate it, and appreciate you stopping by to let me know!

      Thank you!

    • Posted June 5, 2013 at 3:35 pm | Permalink

Oh, too funny. I found the one post you featured listing these blog exercises and it requires I log into Google in order to comment. You are so right about “too much effort to have a conversation.” I’m logged into Google but it wanted me to log in again. Too complicated while on my phone at the moment.

I also see that your links are wrapped in tracking codes. This has a tendency to interfere with the trackback process. Have you tested trackbacks lately to ensure they pass through with the tracking code. With so many people sensitive and alert to odd links before they click, have you gotten any comments about these on your site? Just curious.

Thanks again for the feature in your weekly link post. It’s an honor.

Akismet is a no-go for me because of its expense. But yes, it amazes me that so many sites allow these “comments” to exist on their site.

    • Posted April 8, 2013 at 2:41 pm | Permalink

Akismet is free for personal use and the commercial use is a small amount in general, especially compared to the high volume of comment spam and time spent dealing with it. I’ve tried all kinds of things over the years and for me, nothing beats Akismet.

    • Posted April 8, 2013 at 8:56 pm | Permalink

For my collection of sites, I’d be at the $50/month level of paying for Akismet. Many years ago I paid the $5/month rate, and that was fair and manageable. When they massively increased the costs, I was a freeloader for a while. Now I’m using a separate anti-spam analysis plugin that works just as well as Akismet.

    • Posted April 9, 2013 at 5:41 am | Permalink

Recently, I have some serious problems with Akismet. Now, I’m testing Antispam Bee, which is alternetive antispam plugin. It’s working ok so far.

    • Posted April 9, 2013 at 9:42 am | Permalink

Isn’t Antispam Bee a CAPTCHA? Remember that those don’t work for very long. What kinds of problems did you have with Akismet? Did you report it? Remember to help Akismet improve by reporting issues.

    • Posted April 9, 2013 at 1:09 pm | Permalink

I switched to Antispam Bee from Akismet, and have been very happy with it. Antispam Bee works similarly to Akismet. It’s not a CAPTCHA. It also has an optional (!) central server to help check your comments for spammyness (spamminess?).

I don’t get many coming through on my sites. I delete anything generic like this. A real comment will refer to something specific on my blog or the post, even use my name (which is in my byline). New web writers are fooled by them, or, often they just want to see a comment on their post so they accept them because they aren’t “so bad”.

@Jamesleo88, Akismet WordPress Plugin minimizes the spam comments to a site dramatically. That is its job.

    Because it bears repeating.

It seems there’s been a recent uptick in the number of spam comments getting through Akismet’s filters. If you see comments like these waiting for your approval (i.e. *not* already in your spam folder), mark them as spam and only spam.

On the other side, UK users who are customers of BT or Sky broadband have been finding that their comments are inadvertently being marked as spam. If you are a user that fits that description, please fill out the contact form on the Akismet website or email the folks at Akismet support (support AT akismet DOT com) and make sure to mention that you are a UK community member and your Internet Service Provider.

  14. Posted April 8, 2013 at 8:58 am | Permalink

I seldom leave comments on blogs which use captcha or other verification. I’ve seen blogs using 3 forms of comment spam checkers, overkill. I’m only going to go so far to leave a comment. If I have to jump through hoops and try translating captcas and then still have the comment held for moderation…. that’s too much. If I really have something to say I look for their link on Twitter and just post it there. I really hate stuff like LiveFyre where I have to login 3 times – once with Facebook, once with LiveFyre and then WordPress.com or something like that. Far too much! If comments are so damn unwelcome turn them off! (I’ve posted that to Twitter before too).

  15. Posted April 8, 2013 at 2:38 pm | Permalink

CAPTCHAs haven’t worked for many years. They are usually broken within a couple of weeks, and with the onslaught of human spammers, they can get through these easily. And you’ve stated the truth. Most people will turn away and avoid commenting when they see CAPTCHAs or those dumb torture quizzes. Not worth it when Akismet battles most of them. Thanks!

Yesterday I got one titled “toe nail fungus” and thought, “Really? They think I’m going to buy the fact that someone has that for a name?” LOL!
