The first time a southerner from North Carolina hit me with that question, I was stopped in my tracks. I had to think. I was talking. In fact, I was saying something eloquent and intelligent. Something I needed the other person to understand. Clearly I wasn’t making my point. At the very least, what I was saying didn’t make sense to him.
Ask yourself the same question. In this Blog Exercise, consider what you are talking about when you talk on your blog.
Are you specific? Do you stick to specific topics? Do you have a narrow perspective on your topics, covering only a specific area of interest in your industry or subject matter?
Are you vague? Do you tend to cover anything and everything that catches your interest? Do you have a wide perspective on your topics, covering everything and anything within an industry or subject? Do you rattle on or get to the point? Do you cover one thing per post or ten?
When you speak on your site, what are you really talking about? Is it clear? Does it make sense to your audience? Are you being heard?
Do you use jargon? It might be appropriate to your audience, or it might be over or under their head, their ability to understand.
In the exercise on brainstorming your categories, tags, and articles, you spelled out the things you wish to cover on your site, but think about what you really want to talk about. In order to be heard, we have to be very clear in the presentation of our material.
Your exercise today is to ask yourself what you are talking about and write and publish a post that answers the question publicly.
Consider updating your About Page with this new definition of what you are talking about.
Remember to include a hat tip link back to this post to create a trackback, or leave a properly formed link in the comments so participants can check out your blog exercise task.
