Web Hacks, Worms, Infections, and Viruses: Is Your Blog Prepared?

WordPress Security Tips and TechniquesI just released “Downadup Worm Infection: Cyber Attacks on the Rise in 2009” on the , the first in a short series on security issues facing bloggers and web users in 2009. The Downadup Work has infected more than 3 million sites worldwide and is spreading. Most of these sites are in Asia, but it could reach farther if Windows users and web servers aren’t updated and patched immediately.

Online attacks are increasing and our blogs and online activities are at risk. We need to stay informed and prepared to prevent, protect, and respond to these threats. Last year, many WordPress bloggers had their sites hacked, from big name sites like presidential candidates and top probloggers to personal blogs with little traffic. Anyone is vulnerable to these malicious attacks.

In the next articles in the series, I’ll specifically address WordPress security issues and how to keep your WordPress blog safe and secure. The answer is “update now” but I’ll cover more specific points to help you blog safe.

Can’t wait to read this article. Keeping WordPress updated and secure is certainly a must, but tricky when you’re hosting a dozen or more blogs for clients. In December I had two hack attacks that completely destroyed the database, so it’s also very important to backup those regularly as well.

Unfortunately, one of my student’s old blogs got hacked and was filled with vicious and hate filled propaganda. Once again the lesson of the necessity of upgrades hits hard!
