In an announcement on the WordPress.com blog, WordPress 2.7 will arrive on Thursday, December 4, 2008, at 8PM Eastern Time in the United States.
The article also includes instructions on what to expect on WordPress.com from the new features and instructions on using the new Administration Panel interface, though most of it is really user friendly and intuitive.
WordPress 2.7 Release Candidate 1 was released December 1, with 280 commits since WordPress 2.7 beta 3. This release includes the new menu icons created by the winners of WordPress 2.7: Project Icon, and fixes to the browser bugs that have been giving the development team headaches.
Testing is in high drive if WordPress.com will have WordPress 2.7 on board in two days. This could mean that the full version of WordPress should be released just before or at the same time. Originally, WordPress.com bloggers were told by Matt Mullenweg and Jane Wells of Automattic that WordPress.com bloggers would see WordPress 2.7 about two weeks after the full version launch. Unless WordPress.com will be testing the new version before the full version launch, be ready to install WordPress 2.7 by the weekend.
Cheers and good thoughts to all the hearty developers and testers not getting any sleep to ensure the deadline is met. This is really going to be one of the best versions of WordPress.

I beginning to like the new dashboard, but the new “comments paging” feature is bad SEO (multiple duplicate content). The comments paging should be exclude from being index. just my 2 cents

That is some great news. I’m already prepared to roll 2.7 to multiple blogs a soon as i get my hands on the new version.
Hopefully, the new features will be useful in everyday blogging and administration.
The release of WordPress 2.7 will probably lag the release of its features on WordPress.com. The idea is that any remaining glitches should be quickly identified due to the huge number of people using WordPress.com.
I already use 2,7 RC1. It is more comfortable than 2.6.

I’ve been using WordPress 2.7 since Beta 1 – RC1 in my blog. Kudos for the developers and those who are involved. It’s the best release of WordPress so far!
Exciting stuff.. Will I be able to auto update within the dashboard? I notice that currently I’m taken off site to WordPress to download the latest version. Similar to plugin updating would be cool.

WordPress 2.7 is definitely a huge improvement, lets just hope this is a last overhaul of the admin interface for a while. I love the changes but even more would love to see those changes be more permanent.
Will make learning curve for new bloggers a bit less intense.
Sounds great. I have a question being kind of new to this all. How do I go about finding out if my current site’s theme won’t die on me after the update to 2.7?

I’ve been testing several of the beta releases and am very excited for the final release to hit the streets. I’m not a fan of installing beta versions on client’s sites but have been very tempted thanks to all the cool features added to 2.7.

That is great news. I’ve been using WordPress 2.7 since Beta 3, and have been doing the nightly updates. I guess the 2.7 release version will automatically be upgraded when I press the update button on the bottom right corner of my admin screen.

The first place to look for all help and news on WordPress is the WordPress Support Forums, especially in the area reporting on the upcoming release to see what problems people are having. This gives you a general idea on what to expect.
If you are using a premade WordPress Theme, then check in with your Theme designer for the latest version and follow their instructions.
For the most part, there is little in this version expected to impact Themes, unless there has been customization in the comments area. All WordPress Plugins dealing with comments are probably impacted by the new auto-reply and comment threading feature, though there are Plugins now to turn off comment threading.
News will be out soon on the issues, but most of them have already been addressed in the articles I’ve listed in WordPress 2.7 Release News and Links.

It will not be the last overhaul of the Administration Panels. This is the ongoing work that started with WordPress 2.6 and will probably get more tweaking along the way, though I doubt it will be very dramatic.
As for the learning curve, in the tests with absolute newbie bloggers, WordPress 2.7’s new interface required very little learning – immediate embracing and functionality, the goal of the development team.
To go from the old to the new took me a few seconds, and I’ve been through all the WordPress versions. While there will be whiners, there is much that is easier and more functional about the new design. Expect to “get it” fast.

Have been waiting for WordPress 2.7 for so long!
I just upgraded to 2.7 rc1 and only had one issue with the podpress plugin. Other than that, the upgrade went brilliantly and I really like the changes. I am still looking for a reasonable way to dela with the plugin issue, but aside from that, everything else worked well including my theme. I can’t wait for the official version to be released!

PodPress is at work on a new version, as the current one had problems with past versions of WordPress, so expect an announcement soon on that.

If you are using WordPress.com, you will automatically be upgraded, whether you want it or not. 😀 If you are using the full version of WordPress, you will have to upgrade manually, and thereafter, if everything works right, WordPress 2.7 offers automatic upgrades so you won’t have to fuss with this in the future.

You can sign up for a WordPress.com blog and try it if you are that anxious, but I’d just wait until the full release is out any moment and spend that time making sure your WordPress Theme and Plugins are fully updated and compatible with WordPress 2.7.

WordPress 2.7 RC1 is incredibly stable. The issue in delaying the release is mostly related to browser issues, not core stability. Why not upgrade to the RC1 so you can take advantage of the automatic upgrade feature when the full version comes out? Then there would be no waiting and you could enjoy it yourself!
For WordPress.com users who aren’t really _into_ WordPress (i.e., they’re just blogging and don’t really care about the inner workings of the platform), the change to 2.7 was rather jolting. I gathered this from my friends who blog on WP. They say it’s taking them a bit of time to get used to the new interface. However, I know they’ll soon get used to it and won’t even dream of going back to the old interface once they do get adjusted.
Personally, I love the new WP. Can’t wait for the final release for WP.org!
You’d be surprised at the sophistication of WordPress.com users. Don’t judge them so lightly. 😀 Many have full version blogs but understand the power of SEO with WordPress.com blogs, too.
The change to WordPress 2.7 is jolting, but the community has been warned and ready for months. It will take time to get used to, but most are getting used to it faster than past interface changes. It’s amazing how many positive reports are coming in from the WordPress.com community. Personally, I found almost no learning curve adjustment. A few words catch me off guard, like Design shifting to Appearance, but for the most part, it’s much more intuitive.
And why wait for the final release. Why not upgrade to the RC1 right now and be ready to play with the auto upgrade feature when the final version comes out. That’s what many are doing.
So where is it ? 😐
