WordCamp Dallas in Frisco, Texas, began Friday night with a bang of social fun at a local restaurant, with a lot of the participants and speakers talking WordPress and blogging, and getting to know each other while competing with the loud volume of the announcements for diners.
The beers were huge and the people were wonderful. The organizers, Charles Stricklin and John Pozadzides, welcomed everyone and we all got a chance to get to know each other before we buckled down for a long weekend of WordPress.
Saturday and Sunday were jam-packed with terrific speakers. Laptops were everywhere in the audience, along with video cameras, and everything else to help live blog and capture every moment – or at least check in with blog comments and email while waiting for the speaker to get to the point. 😀 Kidding.
Every speaker was distinctive and brought something new and exciting to blogging and WordPress. The highlight for most was the announcement by Matt Mullenweg, the first speaker on Saturday, of the release of WordPress 2.5 only a few minutes before he walked on the stage.
John Pozadzides worked with the Frisco City Hall facility and has uploaded the videos of the conference.

I’ve covered more details about this event from March 29-30, 2008 in WordCamp Dallas 2008: Celebrating WordPress on the Blog Herald.
I’ve put together a gallery, using the new WordPress 2.5 gallery feature, of the photographs I took during the event.

The gallery is pretty cool. I hope more features are added to it or made available via well supported plugins. The most basic addition to the gallery that I can think of would be links for people to see the prior and following photo(s). Thank you for the tips.
If only there is paging built into the built-in gallery =(
Agree there, GaMerZ
@ GaMerZ:
“Paging” as in turning the gallery into multiple post “pages”? I’d scream and shout NEVER and would not use such a feature as I can’t stand them in blog posts. Or are you talking about something else? Like moving from image to image once you get to the “enlarged” view page?
@ Lorelle:
Well Lorelle, I think he means “Next>>” and “<<Previous” Links so that photos which belong to a post can be viewed as a slide show. I also would love to see that feature in WP 2.5 unfortunately its not there 😦 . Do you know any plug ins which could do that?
Edit to what I said earlier : not exactly a slide show, but something like. What I mean is, to look at every photo one after the other without coming back to the original post each time.
@ theWizard:
I haven’t heard of any yet, but I’m sure someone will get cracking on it, and Gamerz is the ideal cracker. 😀
@theWizard Spot on!
@Lorelle I wish too, but my school is taking all my time, sigh =(
@ Gamerz and @ Lorelle
Same here, all my time is spent attending lectures for my Degree, I’m not as well versed in PHP as plug in developers, I’m an ASP.Net coder therefore I have no idea how to develop a plug in, so hope someone comes up with it soon.
In the meantime I have put forward 2 Ideas for the WordPress team concerning the new WP 2.5 Gallery. I will give these links below, have a look and support it if you think they are useful… 🙂 I really hope they get implemented in WP 2.5.1 or later
Idea: Put Next>> and <<Previous Links in gallery

Idea: 2.5: Add Multiple Galleries Within One Post

@ theWizard:
Good way of making your point known. I hope someone jumps with this! Thanks.
hi lorelle
since you cover just about every aspect of wp, I thought you might know the answer to this weird thing with my wp.
2 of my 2.1.3 wp blogs apparently auto updated themselves to 2.5. I checked with my web host and they said they didn’t do it. Is this some new feature of wp? I’m stumped as to how this happened.
@ Lorelle:
Ok I have found a solution to this problem, a plugin has been made by a plugin developer called Justin Tadlock. It’s called Cleaner WordPress Gallery plugin which i was quick to add into my blog and I should say its simply stunning! works perfectly with slimbox and lightbox. Only worry that I have is that wordpress.com users like you cannot implement it in your blog. 😦
@ theWizard:
I’ll take a look. Thanks! And thanks for chasing this down with such determination.
@ make:
WordPress 2.5 does not feature auto updates of the program. If your host didn’t do it, and you didn’t do it, and no one with access to your blog didn’t do it, then it is truly a mystery. This is best addressed on the WordPress Support Forum, not here, but might not get an answer because human action was the only way this would happen – not auto. Unless you can find the human behind it, you may never know.
Hello! Just a note that you were mentioned this week on WordCast episode 9. 🙂
@ Kym Huynh:
Yes, thank you. I saw the trackback.
