Why You Want To Link To Other Blogs

By Dawud Miracle of dmiracle.com

anniversary logoJust about anyone who’s blogging knows that they need to link to other blogs in their blog posts. You know it, right?

But how many look at linking as a strategy? I’m not talking about a strategy just to increase traffic or exchange links for Technorati rankings – though that certainly is a strategy. Rather, I’m talking about a strategy for reaching your overall blogging goals.

My main reason for blogging is to create conversations which have the potential to develop into mutually beneficial relationships. Sometimes those relationships are with people who become clients or whom I form business partnerships with. Other other times the relationship are more casual and friendships develop. All-in-all, my strategy is to use my blog to reach people.

That’s why I link…to reach people.

If you look at a few posts on my blog one of the first things that may stand out is how much I link. While it’s rare, sometimes I link out two or three times from a post. But more often I link twenty times or more from a given post at dmiracle.com.

But for me, it’s not just the number of posts I link too that’s important. It’s the quality of those posts. I don’t usually link to another blog post unless it’s well-written, informative and useful to the people who read my blog. So by linking out, first, I’m serving my readers by providing them with valuable resources while also building trust and establishing my expertise in the areas I write about. Ultimately, this goes a long way in developing relationships with my individual readers.

The second reason I link out is also to build relationships. But this time, I’m interested in the relationship with another blogger. You’ll see me link to friends and colleagues at times, as well as bloggers I don’t know. But the central theme is the same – I link to build, and then nurture, the relationship.

One of the most effective ways to meet a blogger you’d like to meet is to spend time linking to them. Sure, comment on their blog. But writing a post on your blog that links back to them creates quite a bit more of a statement. Do this a few times, with great content surrounding those links, and you’ll have the foundation for building a relationship. And who knows where that relationship can lead.

What’s your linking strategy?

    Well, even my strategy is to reach to various people through my blog posts.

    Strangely you didn’t link to any post from this post 😛

    I think linking to other blogs or web sites is a good strategy. Sometime webmaster might be concern to loose the reader to that other side, but when you think about that reader are jumping back and forth anyhow ). Here in Germany you need to be careful for legal reason with links so I tent to link to sites that are known to me and not just completely new.

    I just started a new blog and I’m using a feature called “Random Act of Linkess” which basically just features a positive post that I found online. It’s going along with my site’s theme, which is to “accentuate the positive.” I’m hoping it’ll develop some good blogging relationships and build a sense of community at my blog. We’ll see!

    I mainly link for expanding my network and sharing knowledge. At the moment I run an event blog. I’ve linked with other similar (business) blogs, but also with blogs I just like, even though they are not related to the subject of my blog.

    Linking does two big jobs at once: it certainly does help build relationships, and it helps us to provide the resources our readers seek. That’s a big reason why they find us, why they stay and why they subscribe. Then the conversation really begins!

    I love the fact that blogging is the only industry in which you get more readers by sending them away from your business. 🙂 If they like what they find when you send them away, they come back for more, and bring their friends.

    Incredible. We’re changing the whole concept of marketing.

    Hi! Thanks for the chance to hear from other bloggers. Wanted to let you know that the ‘DMiracle’ link is giving me error messages.

    I’ve let Dawud know about his site. He’s been making renovations lately and one of them might have caught him with his pants down. 😀

    It’s important to remember to track who is linking to you and either comment on their post, or follow-up their post.

    I always forget to do this 🙂

    I believe this a useful tip, I link to give credit, as to where I get the news from, unfortunately couldn’t see Dwaud Miracle’s blog when it is still down.

    * Everyone…Sorry I didn’t comment on your comments last week. As some of you know, my site went down on Wed and was offline for more than a day. Cause…massive traffic spike caused by reaching #1 position on Netscape’s main page. So much for shared hosting…

    * Tipsosaurus…Didn’t link out on purpose. But that will change with my next post.

    * Thorsten…I believe I’ve gained far more readers than I’ve lost.

    * Bob…God speed to you.

    * Lorelle…we really are. And it’s amazing the resistance in the traditional marketing corners.

    * engtech…absolutely.

    * Everyone…thanks for your comments. I’m working on today’s post right now.

    I am totally new at this. By the looks of things this is so much bigger than I thought, kind of looking at an iceburg. I so enjoy writing and debating, or just sharing. I hope to be around for a while know I will learn much from Bloggers like you. I have to look into linking as I am not sure how that whole thing works. Thanks for the fun

    I just have a question: if I link to another blog, do they get a notification that they were linked to my blog?

    • Posted August 18, 2015 at 12:11 pm | Permalink

      If you linked to a WordPress site or a site with trackbacks enabled, they should get a notification that you put a link to their post or Page (not the entire site or root domain like example.com) in their comments.

    I am so glad I found your Blog! I am somewhat new to Blogging, and still trying to learn how to get people to my Website. I do have other Bloggers that I admire very much and will now link to them. I hope they will eventually love my Posts and link to me too. So thanks for the help. I do have a question, when you link do you tell it to stay on the same page so they don’t really leave your Blog?

      NEVER use the target=”blank” (forces link to open in a new window or tab) feature. It is illegal in most countries. Yes, it is. This is not my opinion. It is also against the law in the United States to use that feature on links without warning the person before they click the link.

      How long people stay on a site depends upon so many things, and it is their decision. It is not a good or bad thing to make people stay on the site. If you are FedX or UPS, you work as hard as you can to get people on and off your site as fast as possible. If you are an essay site, if the content deserves it, people will stay longer. This is why this is a deceptive statistic. Who cares. If a person lands on my site and gets the answer in 10 seconds and go away happy, my job is complete. If it takes 20 minutes, I feel like I’ve done them a disservice.

      Only good content can keep someone on your site longer. Focus on the content not the games.
