I know this post is many weeks old, but I just can’t resist. A few weeks (months) ago I posted on the user generated blog on SEOmoz.org - just a long list of SEO terms and definitions. Much to my surprise the post got promoted to the main blog and then featured on Sphinn. The last time I checked there were hundreds of inlinks to it and it was the 4th most popular post ever on SEOmoz (by their thumbs up rating system). Since I didn’t have a related site going at the time I didn’t really get much from it. Easy come easy go eh?

One of the best case studies I’ve seen for guest blogging to build audience is http://zenhabits.net/

I’ve seen him do 4-5 guest blog posts a week.

ThankYou for the mention Lorelle, I’m not sure if your a regular reader but thanks for stopping by and taking a look.

I only drew this from personal experience as i guest blogged on harpzon’s blog without having anything to back it up, at that time i was just excited about getting traffic to my blog without thinking about converting that traffic to subscribers. That of course lead to absolutely no benefits for my blog at the time.

If i made the mistake then surely im not going to be the only one so i hope this post helped a few people in deciding when was the right time for them to post.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t go without saying. I wish it did. Many are so excited about the idea of guest blogging and getting attention to their blog, they forget they have to have something to show people when they get there. It’s like a house warming before you’ve unpacked.

I’ve heard this many, many times among the top mistakes many bloggers make.

Another aspect of this is when a post among your first gets picked up by Digg or another social bookmarking site and drives traffic to your blog whether or not you are ready for it. This is a harder one to prep for, but it happens all the time and catches people off guard.
