Blog Models: Ways to Use Blogs

Tan Kian Ann of Blogopreneur offers “10 Practical Ways to Use a Blog”, outlining some common blog models.

These include:

  • Personal weblog
  • Professional interest blog
  • Company website
  • Online resume
  • Newsletter publisher
  • A communication platform for companies
  • A brainless instant publishing site to make money
  • Project development and status announcements
  • Collaboration project logs
  • Chatroom creator

Some blogs are combinations of these things. I’m sure you know plenty of blogs which are personal weblogs and also brainless instant publishing sites to make money. ;-)

A company website can also be a communications platform and include a blog, but I think the difference here is that a company website is more about the information and sales marketing than the interaction and communication.

So which blog model do you have? A combination or specific type? Or do you have a different name for your blog model type?

I’m involved in different kind of blogs. At first i have my own personal blog. The company i work for also has some blogs. There are blogs who publish news (different blogs for different languages and/or services). Also we use to have a internal developer blog. This blog has more a character of a “project log”.

Hey Lorelle, thanks for the link! Actually, with the Plugins you shared, WordPress go way way beyond this list! :P

My blog is unique and can’t be pigeon-holed into any category; or it is a professional interest blog. Either’s good for me.

Perhaps the “Professional Interest” blog would be better named “single purpose” or “focused topic” blog. Or maybe you need another category entirely for hobby blogs. I would suggest that many genealogy blogs are “hobby” rather than “professional” in nature though there are certainly some professional genealogy blogs out there too. Hobby blogs may include documenting personal endeavors (research success), disseminating information in a newsletter-like fashion (book or seminar reviews), project development and status reports (recording the steps involved in writing a family history or family cookbook project and reporting the progress or lack thereof). It seems to me many if not most hobby blogs I’ve read have elements of several of the models you’ve mentioned. I don’t think you can fit them in any one of your models. 10 is a nice round number but I’d argue in favor of “hobby blog” being made #11 ;-)

I fall into the “personal weblog” category, but I like Jaaia’s idea of a “hobby blog”, too.

My blog is an academic blog, a blog as a research tool. I think it is quite different from the models mentioned by Tan Kian Ann although it is closest to the “Professional Interest Blog” A research blog is also a “repository of knowledge” but it strives to be more than that. It strives to eventually reflect upon that knowledge. It also changes the way research is usually done, in a closed environment where only a final product is presented in the open. In a research blog you can track developments in the research.

My site is a combination personal/corporate blog. It’s a travel blog for women who want to get away for a couple of days with girlfriends. I research the cities and opportunities there, take the getaway with one or more friends, then report on how the trip went. Where we stayed, cost, ground transportation options, restaurant reviews, shopping options, sightseeig options. My slant is on good value, unique and off-the-beaten path things to do. I report honestly on what we liked and what we didn’t. So it’s a very personal blog. BUT, I am a writer for Midwest Airlines and it is a corporately-sponsored, but totally uncensored blog. A perfect match. Some even say a perfect job.

I fall into about 3 categories for the various ways I use wordpress. The first is my personal blog, a lot of random stuff, but I try and keep it semi useful. The second is an information/interest blog for teaching the basics of photography. Then I also use wordpress as a CMS for company websites. So no commenting, just wordpress pages. It is such a flexible script that it make building web sites easy and quick.
