Monetizing WordPress Plugins

WordPress PluginsThere are a lot of ways you can add ads to your WordPress blog. As part of my month long series on WordPress Plugins, I thought I’d take a glimpse into WordPress Plugins that help you monetize your WordPress blog.

WordPress Plugins that add ads to your blogs may assign advertising blocks to specific areas, or allow you to customize where they appear. Others will automatically inject them between blog posts or within the post content itself.

Note: For the most part, the following WordPress Plugins involve editing your WordPress Theme template files in order to add the Plugin template tag exactly where you wish the generated information to appear. Adding Adsense Ads to Your WordPress Blogs

For a long time, AdSense from Google was one of the most popular methods of monetizing your blog. Thus, there are a lot of WordPress Plugins to help you add AdSense to your blog.

Adsense Deluxe WordPress Plugin place the above AdSense Deluxe screen to your WordPress options panel. From there you can create multiple AdSense ad units and decide what parts of the site should have or not have ads, and what ad sizes to run. The Adsense Deluxe+ WordPress Plugin claims they go farther to help you customize your ad placement and improved performance.

AdSense Sharing Revenue and Earnings System WordPress Plugin helps you track your AdSense earnings and impressions, including publicizing the information. Other WordPress Plugins that will help you track your Adsense income include Adsense Clicks Tracker and Adsense Earnings WordPress Plugin.

Author Adsense WordPress Plugin permits ads to be displayed by author, so the post author gets credit for the ads, not the blog itself. For multiple blogger blogs, this is an interesting way to share the wealth.

Amazon.com WordPress Plugins

There are several different Plugins that will help you add Amazon.com ads, wishlists, current reading lists, and other Amazon ad types to your WordPress blog.

The powerhouse of all things Amazon.com for WordPress is Amazon Media Manager WordPress Plugin. There is a lot of flexibility and customization in this Plugin. It’s been around for a few years and only gets better with time. The Amazon Media Manager allows you to select Amazon.com books, music, and products from within your WordPress Administration Panels and easily add them to your WordPress blog in a variety of ways. It keeps track of what you’ve added, and helps you choose how to display the ads, and so much more.

Now Reading WordPress Plugin incorporates data from Amazon.com and allows you to add a “review” or commentary about the book or product.

WP-Amazon WordPress Plugin lets you to search Amazon as you write your post and embed the Amazon information directly into your blog post or Page.

Last Amazon Review WordPress Plugin showcases your most recent review on Amazon.com, helping you to promote the book or product. It features customized configuration of the incoming information and is also available as a Widget to work with Widgitized WordPress Themes.

Amazon Wishlist WordPress Plugin lets you put your Amazon.com wishlist on your WordPress blog, a nice way of asking for books in lieu of money.

Other Advertising WordPress Plugins For Your WordPress Blog

A lot of advertising javascripts and links require no special features to add to your WordPress Theme, but sometimes, a little WordPress Plugin help goes a long way.

CafePress WordPress Plugin allows you to create an online store front for selling your blog products through CafePress.

eMiniMall WordPress Plugin works with Chitika’s eMiniMalls to integrate them into your WordPress blog.

Text Ads Link Sidebar WordPress Widget helps you add Text Ads Links to your sidebar.

AdKit24 WordPress Plugin adds an ad bar for your WordPress blog with configuration through the WordPress Administration Panels.

TicTap Ads WordPress Plugin helps you add TicTap Contextual Ads ads to your blog.

Bidvertiser WordPress Plugin for Bidvertiser ads.

Many large website and blog supporting advertisers feature their own WordPress Plugins to help you add their ads to your blog.

Ad and Banner Rotator WordPress Plugins

There are a variety of random generators and rotators you can use to feature random ads and banners on your WordPress blog. Some are simple scripts while others are easy-to-use and highly customizable WordPress Plugins.

WPAds WordPress Plugin provides rotating options but also allows you to define the ad positions on your blog. It supports AdSense, Yahoo Publishers Network, and other ads including image banners.

PHPAdsNew Integration WordPress Plugin helps to add an ad banner or other content to your WordPress blog.

Shopping Cart WordPress Plugins

I thought I would find more WordPress Plugins that help you set up a store front or online shopping cart, but I only found two.

Instinct e-Commerce Light WordPress Plugin adds a shopping cart to your WordPress blog for selling products and services, or for accepting fees online.

YAK WordPress Plugin is simple to use, allowing association of products with specific blog posts and more. There are some customization options and it adds two Admin Panels to your WordPress blog for showing and fulfilling orders, helping you keep track of orders, and managing products.

PayPal Donations WordPress Plugins

There are several WordPress Plugins and Widgets that will help you include a PayPal Donate Button on your WordPress blog, which is especially helpful for WordPress Plugin and Theme authors.

Adding Ads to Feeds

While I’m not personally a fan of ads on feeds, here are some WordPress Plugins to help you add ads to your WordPress feeds. Be aware that some advertisers will not allow you to run their ads in your feeds. Check your Terms and Conditions before using any of these.

Better Feed WordPress Plugin supposedly offers an option for adding ads to your feeds. Other WordPress Plugins that allow ads on feeds include:

Monitoring Other People’s Money

There are only a few WordPress Plugins that will help you monitor other people’s money, and maybe some of your own, though there are a lot of Google Gadgets you can use are similar to Widgets and Plugins, and integration into WordPress is fairly easy.

Stock Quote Tooltip WordPress Plugin ExampleStock Quote Tooltip WordPress Plugin allows you to create a hover mouseover effect over the link of any business to display the stock quotes in an AJAX mini window, similar to the Snap Preview effect.

Stock Quote Sidebar allows you to customize which stocks you want to follow and displays them as a list of stock quotes in your sidebar.

Stock Chart Widget displays a chart of your stock quotes in WordPress Widget.

Web 2.0 Rubble Widget is a regular Widget you can add to Widget-enabled WordPress Themes that tracks 10 Web 2.0 type stocks that are considered “popular”.

Move The Markets Post Stocks List WordPress Plugin isn’t the name of this Plugin which the author hasn’t yet named. Still, it’s an interesting stock market and investment oriented WordPress Plugin. It scans your post for stock market symbol names (like Exchange: SYMBOL, NYSE: CSX, Nasdaq: SUNW) and creates a table at the bottom of each post with links to search results for that ticker symbol on Yahoo, Google, and StockTickr.

Monetizing Your WordPress Blog

    Thanks for the mention of PostPost. This plugin is really to allow you to customize content before or after your post on your site and, separately, in your feed. That could be ads from Google, Commission Junction, or any other advertiser. But, it could be utilized for simply putting a Copyright or banner, etc.

    You have a fantastic blog, Lorelle! I really enjoy reading it and am so happy to be posted on it.

    Here is another WP shopping cart [or a shop] I found by googling for it:

    It seems the info there is not yet organized or not organized clearly, or maybe I am too slow to grasp the site easily. The only other extra info I could find on that same shopping cart plugin was at:

    It may not have been updated for a while, though.

    Which is why they weren’t included at the time I wrote this. If I couldn’t find specific and updated information, they weren’t included on the list. And this is in no way a complete listing of all the possibilities out there. Just the ones I found that looked “reputable”.

    I found a lot of out of date Plugins, but the ones listed here appeared to be viable in WordPress 2+. When possible, I tried to put my focus on WordPress Plugins with clear and recent activity and support from the author.

    I might also mention my Amazon Showcase WordPress Widget. The widget allows you to display up to 10 Amazon items in your sidebar, and lets you enter your Amazon Associate ID to earn money from the click-throughs.

    While you may not care for ads on feeds, there’s an excellent alternate way to use the features of the Feedvertising WordPress plug-in from Text-Link-Ads.

    I’ve had great success using the Private RSS Ad Listings to offer subscriber incentives.

    I place links to my free ebooks, special reports, and downloads in the footer of my articles - so that subscribers are rewarded with access to additional premium content.

    I got the idea from Copyblogger.

    There are actually very few WordPress Plugins that will help you with SEO. People seem to forget that SEO means “search engine optimization”, fixing the code under the page to make your blog search engine friendly. No Plugin can fix bad or broken code. WordPress comes very SEO ready right out of the box. It losing it’s SEO qualities when people choose badly formed Themes or do-it-yourself Themes and screw up.

    The rest of the so-called SEO WordPress Plugins are just frosting. You need meat and potatoes for good SEO and you will find it in Do-It-Yourself Search Engine Optimization Guide.

    Now, I was under the impression that blogs on wordpress sites cannot monetize their content through ads. Am I wrong or has there been a recent relaxation of this no-ads rule?

    Yes there is a wordpress shop plugin but its not quite the same as using the original… grab WP e-Commerce now while its still hot!!!

    Another great source for revenue for your site can be through using Kontera’s ContentLinks. I have created a plugin that makes adding this to your WordPress blog a breeze. The plugin makes it easy to add the necessary Kontera JavaScript and has options to control the placement of the ContentLink.

    AdSense management plugins for WordPress make your life easyer. There are lots of tutorials out there on how to set up AdSense on your blog. Some free blog hosting websites offer this plugin installed by default. All you have to do is enter your AdSense ID and start earning.

    You can not use AdWords, Adsense or any advertising on your WordPress.com blogs. No paid posts. VERY SERIOUS on that one. That’s part of the “free” in “free”. Free of advertising. :D

    You can pay for a VIP account and then do whatever you want, including stuffing your blog with ads, though they review and decide who they will accept, so if you are an add stuffer, you are not likely to be accepted.

    How about if I have my own domain but want to host it here with WP?
    Can I do the paid postings? Or I have no choice at all but to get it
    host elsewhere?

    If one day I decided to not host my blog anymore with the hosting company and
    wanted to revert back to the ‘Free’ WP, can that be done?

    WordPress.com blogs are free. There is no advertising or pay-per-post money making activities allowed. Free is free and has restrictions.

    You can purchase a domain on WordPress.com, which is actually “domain mapping”. You buy the domain name and pay WordPress.com to map it to a free WordPress.com blog. However, I believe the advertising issue still remains.

    You can use the WordPress.com VIP hosting which is several hundred dollars a month and do ANYTHING you want.

    You can use the free full version of WordPress on any paid hosting site which works with WordPress requirements and do whatever you want in any way shape and form with few restrictions.

    You can import and export into a WordPress blog (any of them) to and from most popular types of blogging programs, and take your WordPress.com free blog with you when you leave it, or come back to a free blog whenever you want.

    First, never put your email address inside of a comment box. It is in the comment form - which is enough.

    Second, if you had read Mike’s post, you would have read:

    However, as a loyal reader has lovingly pointed out, if you want AdSense or any other kind of JavaScript component added to your sidebar all you need to do is paste it inside the standard Text Widgets that come built-in with Automattic’s Sidebar Widgets plugin!

    You do not need this Plugin which is why you probably can’t find it.

    I’m wondering if a year later this list has evolved and changed with the upgrades to WordPress to Version 2.3.2?

    I’ve seen a number of plugins fail with the upgrade, and as I search for monetizing plugins, I’m coming up short. I’d love to see an update piece on the topic.

    If a WordPress Plugin on this list has not been upgraded to the current version, please contact the author. They might have an update but my link might not be to the updated version. There will be a LOT of changes to WordPress in the next version, so I’m holding off updating more than 30 of these articles on WordPress Plugins until then.

    Who Sees Ads WordPress Plugin is now considered one of the hottest Plugins for adding ads.

    I hear that there are 6 plugins for WordPress that can be used to start a product review blog but… I’ve tried to do a Google search to find them myself but I only managed to find 1 of them:

    Making money online is what majority of people love and Looking for.

    My own experience showed me that Google AdSense is easiest and quickest way to make money online.

    The Adsense Deluxe and WordPress Plugin are great to get the big benifits from AdSense
    Ads.

    When someone tells me a link doesn’t work and gives me the specific information, it’s updated. These Plugins show you what is possible, and sometimes there are two or more versions of the same Plugin, so it’s goal is to help you find the keywords and ideas behind what is possible, then go hunt for the specifics yourself. Plugins are updated in and around major releases of WordPress, but also on a schedule known only to the author.

    I really ignored there were so many plugins for AdSense available on WordPress platform, it sounds crazy!

    May be I will consider blogging also with WordPress on my future blogs…

    Thanks for the great post Lorelle :) I’ve recently used SMF to monetize my blog.

    The latest SMF2 beta version offers a paid subscription system whereby users can register, pay via PayPal or credit card and then automatically gain access to previously hidden areas of your WordPress site.

    Currently I’m only giving users access to another section of SMF, but I plan to extend this to a paid upgrade service for my dropdown menu CSS generator (which is part of my WordPress theme).

    Great list but I’m surprised that you don’t mention OIOPublisher, arguably the best WP plugin for managing ads on a WordPress blog. It’s not free but at $37, it pays for itself with the amazing feature allowing you to setup your own advertising affiliates.

    Probably it’s not mentioned because there are fabulous Plugins that manage ads on WordPress blogs that are free, including the very popular Who Sees Ads by Ozh. There are many Adsense and monetizing WordPress Plugins, paid and free, and even more since I wrote this article.
