Building Your Blogging Audience One Reader at a Time

8 Steps to Growing Your Blog Community One Person At a Time by Ben Yoskovitz is a great step-by-step approach to helping you build a relationship with your readers and audience, one reader at a time.

In the first three tips, Yoskovitz points out comments as the top of the list way to encourage your relationship with your readers:

1. Write to Get More Comments. Turning a visitor into a commenter is a key way of building a relationship with someone. Here are some blog writing tips to get more comments.
2. Reply to Comments. Unless you get hundreds of comments per day there’s no reason you can’t do this. Even if it’s to say “thank you, come again!” People who comment are more interested in building meaningful relationships; in a way, through commenting, they already have.
3. Visit Commenters’ Sites. Most people leave a link when they comment. Click on it. Visit their blog and see what’s there. You never know what you’ll find.

Blog comments are the conversation you have with your readers. Make them feel important by making their comments important to you. When your audience knows you are listening to them, they tend to come back to talk to you.

Lorelle – I appreciate the link over. I’m all about comments!

Although I recently tried installing a threaded comments plugin which didn’t work. Probably cause I’m on WordPress 2.1 at this point so maybe that’s the problem. But it seems threaded conversations could really add value when a post gets a lot of comments.

That’s what I feel a blog is about. Personal relationship with other people, specifically your readers. Doesn’t have to be many, but it helps to know that people aren’t just glancing through a one sided glass of a blog.
