@Sam: I'm not sure I understand. If you email or respond to a spammer, they know your email is valid. The chance of legal action is slim and none. NEVER respond to a spammer. Report them to the proper authorities and mark the spam as spam.

Wow… I came in from an unrelated search on google. I read the article and want to comment that it is one of the worst pieces of advice I’ve seen in awhile.

Simple > you email your url to an email address and the spammer removes it for the sake of not getting sued… or be stupid… ignore it and continue to recieve spam from them.

Spam email is a related but different subject. There are many ways of stopping email spam from entering your inbox. As for comment spam, I’m having great luck with the mentioned plugins and programs.

As for helping to stop people from linking, education is the only answer.

It is unfortunate that while many Internet savvy people know that clicking on links in spam mail will only trigger more spam and inform the spammer that this is a live email, most people who use the Internet are not as savvy… it is a big issue. For one of my accounts, I get like 90 emails a day, and 89 of them are spam. Sometimes, its not easy to sieve out the correct mail, and you just end up deleting important information that you should have received.

Is there a way out?

Removing URLs from comments is stupid. People often want to direct the blogger or another commenter to some information. However, WordPress automatically puts in a nofollow tag to all URLs in comments, so they are worthless to comment spammers on WordPress blogs.

With this information, it would be very worthwhile for comment spammers to have a way of detecting whether ot not they are spamming on a WordPress blog (easy to do) and bypass it because it just won’t work, especially if the site is using Akismet or other comment spam fighting tools. It’s a waste of their time. Better to concentrate on other blogging platforms which don’t have the great comment spam protection WordPress users have.

I would like to say that it would be a good idea to have some type of a filter which allows the WordPress to automatically detect and remove URL’s from the comments. This helps keeps the blog neat and clean from spam.

Why in the name of God would we even click on something like that? More to the point, why would we waste further time entertaining like that?
