I also have one of those blogs that lacks a narrow focus. In fact, it tackles multiple subjects; specifically my life working as a writer while raising kids and dogs. Yes, narrow focus makes for easier promotion and attraction of readers--but it can get old fast. I'm willing to accept the trade off of having a hard-to-pigeon-hole blog in order to gain a free flow of never-ending subject matter.

Even so, writing every day does eventually get to you. I keep a supply of funny books that make me laugh out loud by my computer. The act of laughing helps loosen me up.

I have a notebook tucked in my back pocket to catch all those on-the-fly ideas. And I also write a few weeks worth of blogs in a sitting, so I can take breaks and make space just to live my life without always feeling that I have to find a blog post in everything I do.

[...] Yep, I’ve definitely become a tech geek - the evidence being I find myself checking blogs about blogging such as Lorelle on WordPress. It’s a good read but I stumbled upon this article and chuckled - I wonder if she’s taking part in NaBloPoMo? I think if I ever do take part in the blogging project that dare not speak its name, it’s going to be way different and hopefully unusual. Like…every three days, a post has to be written in haiku form. Or each Friday, write about someone you know, and so on. Too bad I didn’t think of this earlier or I could have done this and not be stuck in this unfortunate literary (if you can even call it that) backwater. [...]

I like to take a break sometimes and just do some stuff which doesn't really require my brain that much - but still lets me feel like I've gotten some work done. One of the things I do is to watch online videos and post the ones I like to www.infectiousvideos.com which is a video blogging service that has a 50-50 revenue sharing system. It means I'm still (sorta) working - but in a chilled out fun way.

Comment 4 up there is an excellent idea, that shows some nice creativity.

I make sure to right stuff down as I go about my day, stuff that I think may have some sort of an idea within it. No matter how small. Sometimes when im stuck, if I look over my notes (as perplexing as they appear), new ideas are sparked. But I am one of the worst at coming up with ideas. So, this post and the comments is very good, I'm taking some great information away with me. Thanks.

I find I'll go through a themes (like my series on Web Anonymity: http://engtech.wordpress.com/2006/10/18/web-anonymity-101-digital-breadcrumbs/) for a week or two, then switch.

I break one of the cardinal blogging rules by not having a very narrow focus (my blog is tech stuff I find interesting.. and I'm a generalist so it's varied). I know this hurts my overall readership as people prefer subscribing to blogs that have a narrow focus. Inspiration can be as simple as a friend asking a tech question (I swear 50% of my how-to guides come from that).

I saw the coolest idea for doing "something different" with your blog a few weeks ago. http://engtech.wordpress.com/2006/11/04/blogging-getting-you-down-try-something-new-and-interesting/

I've switched to (at Darren of ProBlogger's recommendation) to writing a bunch of my posts at one time, so I can really ride the wave of inspiration in one fell swoop. Once I get started writing, it's generally not that hard to keep going, and then I have stuff in the queue for a week or so, and can give myself a break.

Also, my blog is slightly tied to the seasons, so I cut back on it when the gardening high season rolled over into Fall. I deliberately went to an every-other-day posting schedule so I really only have to write about three posts a week (one post each week is a photo-only post), and that has helped open things up, too. It means I actually have topic ideas in the mental queue (and saved on a Backpack page) through the next month or two, too, because I'm no longer posting every day.
