Excellent post there Lorelle, great read and food for thought. My own 2 cents.

Firstly, Diggers don't like blogs hosted @ Wp.com, Blogger.com, I've seen many fantastic articles by our Wordpress users which are really intellectual being labelled as blogspam.

Secondly, leaving Typepad out of the fray , most of the other hosted blogging services - blogger, xanga, etc are more of journals than blogs. I hardly see intellectual blogs.

Why Wordpress.com? Simple, all the benefits of a hosted wordpress blog for free, that's why! Except for themes ofcourse. I don't agree with the bandwidth factor, the thing is that people can't afford it. Students who write good stuff can't be wasting money on buying hosting and everything. Similarly experts in 1 field may not be experts in setting up blogs, etc.

No people don't write for Digg. Digg just helps them express it to the world and get posts more exposure.

Finally, Wordpress is the platform of choice for any proffesional blogger.
