If the neighbor has DSL, maybe he can make a deal to pay for part of the internet in exchange for a wireless connection? You didn't mention the distance from house to house, but most people have a shed in the back yard that can be used to house a signal booster.

Heck, if the houses are really close, run a hardwire connection.

Is there satellite broadband available?

A friend who lives at the end of a dirt road in Utah with no land line phones uses satellite to get on the Net. And cell phones to call people.

Things in Greece (where I live) are much worse. All of a sudden, ISPs and phone companies discovered the joys of aDSL (which got damn long to get to my country) and they make the dialup connections much more pricey (up to 70%) to increase the number of new aDSL registrations.

Which is absurd, in my opinion. When someone wants to use the Internet sporadically, she shouldn't be obliged to pay a costly monthly fee.

(because even aDSL is much costlier in Greece than in other european countries)

Can he get cell phone reception at his house? Maybe a Sprint or Verizon card would do the trick? They're more expensive than dial-up, but provide fairly high speed connections. Check to see if he happens to be in an area with EVDO.

Don't hold your breath, but if it happens to be available, that may be worth checking out.
