Blogger as Researcher – Almost a Journalist?

In a short and well-written post, Gail Fisher of the The Los Angeles Times writes about the “Journalist as Researcher” on Poynter Online. While aimed at journalists, it made me think about the blogger as a form of journalist, reporting upon the world around them. Here are some important points she makes.

Read: Be well-read. Read your own publication, the competition and various news magazines…

Learn: Learn how to find the resource material that will make you well-informed about the stories you’re interested in reporting. Become skilled at tracking stories with only a few leads…Is this a subject matter worth pursuing? Why? What is the focus?

Localize: Localize international and national issues for your audience…How is your community responding to these issues?

Cultivate: Cultivate an understanding about your community. Explore the many cultures within the various neighborhoods…Develop relationships within the business community, and contacts will be calling you with possible story ideas.

I will be writing more about how to find content for your stories as well as offering help on how to blog about current events around you, so think about the points she makes now in preparation.

What are you doing to help you blog more about your life and world around you? Are you blogging about current events near or far, or just in passing? Is it important to you to be some kind of voice for your community or others with your point of view? How far as you willing to go to become that voice through your blog? Do you sometimes feel more like a journalist than a blogger? Do you know the difference?
