Top Searches for 2005

It’s that time of year again when the search engines report on the top searched keywords and names for the year. For 2005, I was surprised to find

Oh, by the way, Lycos reports that this has been the Pam Anderson Decade with Pamela Anderson leading the top 50 search results with antics in her personal and professional life. Other top search results for the past ten years with Lycos included Dragonball, Anime Legend, Pokemon Card Game, Britney Spears, Baby Name, WWE, Tatoos, and Las Vegas. Yet, on Yahoo and Google, Pamela Anderson didn’t even make the top 10 search results. Makes you wonder who is using which search engine.

Which is the thought I had as I went through the entire list. You would think that as search engines grow and evolve, one or two would be clear favorites, but maybe some search engines are attracting specific types of people while others attract other types. Clearly, with the top results from Google, the international crowd’s search terms outweigh popular English terms, highlighting the tremendous effort Google has put into foreign language services. Famous people, usually outrageous celebrities, continue to lead the top list across the search engines, but there are a few surprises, such as competitor search engines ending up on some top search results. Interesting to see the growing interest in search engines themselves.
