Playing Tag With WordPress

Not long ago, I talked about the awesome Ulitmate Tag Warrior WordPress Plugin by Christine Davis and how to add this plugin to your full version WordPress blog to put the power of tags on your blog. I thought I’d also point out an excellent guide to putting tags on your WordPress blog by Trainque called “Turning WordPress Into a Tag Based Blogging Application”.

What I ended up with a was a website that functions more like an internally hyperlinked set of posts and topics rather than a journal with archives by month. I think it’ll make for a better experience for visitors to this site, who can now browse by their topic of interest rather than through the order of posts.

If you want to get more tag-oriented on your site and help your users navigate your site better, check out this great primer and also see the articles on how to put tags on your posts, how to create a custom bookmarklet to add tags to your wordpress.com or WordPress posts, the difference between tags and categories, and the problems with tags and tagging to better understand how this all works.

Lorelle: have you looked at the new Shadows plugin? It allows you to add tags to WP pages plus add them to your shadows page. My concern with this plug in is that linking to shadowss and shadows linking back could result in a reciprocal link penalty. What do you think?

At my small business coaching website site I have started to use Ultimate Tag Warrior with links to Technorati as well as internal tag links.

Thanks for the links. They’ll help. I get tagging but don’t think I’ve ever grokked it fully.

Lorelle, I’d love to tag but don’t quite understand how to set it up. I like what you’ve done and would, if you don’t mind, like to copy it (the structure, not the substance).

I just can’t figure out how to make it happen.

If you are feeling generous, a note would put me a long way forward.

    Thanks.

    Jeremy,

Simply check out the specific step-by-step instructions in this article and you will have quick and simple and painless tags like I have on this site. Trust me, it is a simple copy and paste and then copy and paste and you have tags. The hardest part is coming up with the tag words. 😉

If you want a tag cloud and more sophisticated tagging on a full version of WordPress, then it’s hit the books and learn how to use The Ultimate Tag Warrior WordPress Plugin which is simple, but not so simple as to be mindlessly simple to use. Once it is setup, however, it is mindless. It’s the setup that can perplex, but hopefully I have explained it well and the instructions have improved on the Plugin.

Here is a working link to Jarrod Trainque’s article Turning WordPress Into a Tag Based Blogging Application. I hope html syntax works in the comments section!
