WordPress Power User Features – Just Press It

If you are a power WordPress user and blogger, then I have a feature you have to know about. It will help you capture information from the web as you browse, allowing you to post information on your WordPress site with just a couple clicks.

WordPress Press It BookmarkletWith every installation of WordPress comes a little gem called Press It. It is a javascript “bookmarklet” found on the Write Post screen in your Admininstration Panels. It’s at the very bottom. If you click and drag the link to your Link Toolbar in your Internet browser, it will put the javascript on the bar for you to quickly click and use.

When visiting a site you want to create a link and post about on your blog or website, just click the link and a window will pop up with either your site’s login or, if you are already logged in, a condensed version of the Write Post screen. Inside will be the title filled out with the title of the website you are visiting (if there is one) and a link in the Editing textarea. You just fill in the text, mark the categories, then save it as a draft or private or publish it.

Now, this is even more powerful than you first may think. If you select text on the page and then click Press It, the text you highlighted will be copied and pasted into the post. Wow! That is cool and I love it. What a great feature.

You can learn more about how to use the Press It in the WordPress Codex.

Until Flock is widely available for the masses, I recommend the JustBlogIt extension for Firefox. You can configure multiple blogs and have right-click access to post whatever page you’re reading to your blog(s). Same deal with the bookmarklet. Highlight text and it is added into the editor.

If you need help with podcasting, check out Podcasting instructions on the WordPress Codex and allow search for podcasting and feeds on the WordPress Support Forum as there is a lot of helpful people and answers there.

I’ll have an article on podcasting in WordPress coming up soon. Stay tuned.

    Hi Lorelle,

I found your comments here http://www.websitetology.com/?p=303 but can’t seem to find the Press It function in my 2.5 admin? Help?

    thx in advance

    @ jeela:

The Press It bookmarklet was dropped by accident in the release candidates and I was assured it would be in the final release. I can’t find it on WordPress.com and I’ll check it out with the updates and look into this. The previous version should still work – I was told.

ah ok, thx for the speedy response, Lorelle!

I still have it installed on my desktop machine but want it on a laptop, too. Will wait to hear.

    Hi Lorelle-
I found some discussions about this on the codex:

I think not including it until 2.6 is criminal.
I’m thinking about writing a plugin to provide the feature.
Can you ask the powers that be to put it back in WP 2.5.1 please- since you have the juice?

    @ David Esrati:

Everyone knows about this, and it was to be put back in before the last release, but it was overlooked as part of the testing. The WordPress 2.3.3 version still should work, and will the versions described in the support discussions you have listed. I have no direct sway with the powers that be, but you do. If there isn’t one, have your say in Ideas and Kvetch! to let WordPress know that you want it back.

  1. […] The technique I use for putting my Site Search Tags on the bottom of each post uses a bookmarklet. A bookmarklet is a bit of javascript that you can put on your bookmark or favorites sidebar or toolbar, similar to the WordPress Press It Bookmarklet. I keep my tagging bookmarklet in my toolbar so it’s fast and easy to access. The javascript is literally a mini-program with programming language instructions. In this case, the bookmarklet brings up a pop-up window form in which I enter my tags and click OKAY, then it generates a list of my tags and HTML which I copy and paste into the bottom of my posts. Nice and simple. […]
