The new Blogger is now better than wordpress.com IMHO.
[...] It didn’t take long for a few to jump into the “Will WordPress Rule the World” band wagon. My article called “Will WordPress Beat TypePad, MT, Blogger, and all the rest?” struck a cord in many, mostly those who never thought that WordPress was a contender at all, and that Wordpress.com was just a testing ground and not serious. Many liked my photography film analogy as a good indicator for the future of blogging programs. Competition over film led to a complete revolution in how we think, take, and use photographs. In less than 30 years, photography is completely different. I remember my mother’s excitement at her first Polaroid camera when I was a child. She saved and scrimped to buy it for the thrill of instant pictures of us as we grew like weeds. Now, she tosses a small digital camera around off her wrist to grab pictures of her grandchildren, also growing like weeds, which she emails around the world to friends and family.
It's really clear to me that you don't need a hosted blog but one of your own. Find a reasonable host which ranges from $5 to $20 a month and sign up. If they have WordPress automatically installed, you are ahead of the game. If not, install it yourself.

Then you can add e-commerce and whatever you want with full control over everything.

Pay close attention to bandwidth, storage space, access, database type and version, PHP version, and email services when you choose a host.

While WordPress is free, if you want to make money expect to spend some money to make money. Going for free or low cost hosting will only limit your efforts, and in a few months of frustration, you will want to get your own site with its own name (not myname.cheaphost.com), and then have to deal with transferring everything. Start smart to begin with.

Luckily, with WordPress you have the option of free, low cost and host control, or do-it-yourself, total control versions.

If there is one point I can make that I hope you will listen to, it is this.

If you are doing this as a business, be professional. Do things professionally, seriously, and make a plan. The more serious you are about your plan of action, the more focused and professional you are about the plan, the more likely you are to be successful, in whatever you are doing from blogging to setting up shop anywhere.

Part of focusing and being professional also means focusing on ONE THING not two. Pick one and then go with it for a year. If it fails, learn from your mistakes and then try the other. But doing the two, unless you are HADD, will only hurt you in the long run. Focus, focus, focus.

Good luck.

Am trying to make a strategic decision between Wordpress, Typepad and Blogger. Will be using it as blogs about my electronic trading book and also medical well-being info. What I don't like about wordpress is that you do not have the option of adsense, ie. potentially making money.
What I do not like about Blogger is complaints that for false spamming reasons people are losing their blogs. Typepad's hosting cost is $4.95, 8.95 and 14.95/month. Looks like wordpress and blogger have a free option. I welcome your recommendation and a notice as to when this comment is answered. Thanks and happy holidays.

[...] I’ve both read and received several questions regarding WordPress.com – “How is WordPress.com going to make money? Are there going to be ads?â€? It also appears that some think WordPress.com will compete or should somehow be compared to other hosted services (read: TypePad). [...]
